Determining the order in which multiple products are displayed

Multiple products may be displayed in sections such as Featured Products. How is the order in which these products are displayed determined?

Featured products are selected and displayed randomly from the set of products matching the filter. E.g. marked as a featured products or for new products all than are not older than 30 (60,...) days.

So each time you can see different products, when they are more such products than you display.
