Need help With Categories and Sideboxes

Hello. I am new to Zen Cart and am trying to create an online store. I can't seem to figure out a couple of things so far.

1. My created categories show up in the sidebox on the left where I want them to, but they also show up underneath the header image on top. I don't want them there

2. When I am in admin Tools/Layout Boxes Controllers I can't get most of my sideboxes to show up, even on the right side. I even turned the status to on.

Get those to show &
Find out how to use a "contact" link without editing php or creating custom HTML

Then I'd have a better grasp on things. It seems hard to find the answers. Thanks soo much for your help

Some of the boxes are auto-magic - they don't show unless you are on certain pages or have something in the shopping cart.

Tell-a-friend only shows on the product pages - and if you click the add to cart button the shopping cart box will show up.
