Shipping limited to X items

I need to limit each purchase using item.php to X products (because of high fixed costs incurred by the shipping method).

Do you know a way to do this ?

I need to limit the number of products sold with each purchase
to a maximum of X items (X being an integer like 2 or 3).

For clarity, this is meant for fast delivery purchases only. With fast delivery, we have a fixed cost with each delivery that doubles if there are more than X items in the package. So, the idea is avoid ending up loosing money.

There is a Minimum Order add on in the Free Software Add Ons that you might be able to adapt for this to be based on Item Count and limiting the number of items allowed ...

Wouldn't it be smarter to limit the shipping methods available instead of the number of items you sell?
