Subcategories not showing in category page center

It does not appear to be commented out ...

Could you confirm that the setting in the Configuration ... Product Listing ...

Show SubCategories on Main Page while navigating
Show Sub-Categories on Main Page while navigating through Categories

0= off
1= on

is set to ON ...

That was the answer:

Admin > Configuration> Product Listing > Show Sub-Categories on Main Page while navigating through Categories

Was off, should be on.

I think like most I was looking through Admin> Configuration > Layout Settings >

Had no idea Layout setting was hiding in product listing or why on earth it should be defaulted to OFF without warning anywhere else in the GUI. Like dude you just made a subcategory - why not check that the function for displaying it is switched on because for some reason we set this to "off" just to drive you completely mad for 48 hours out of your life.
