Receiving Images not Writeable Message when uploading to site

All of a sudden I am unable to download images to my website. Message received that Catalog images directory is not writeable... Do not understand what happened and please note, I am a computer idoit! Please help.

Check the permissions on the directory or directories that you are trying to load your images so ...
