Can't add new categories

I have been overseas for a month and now I'm back I can't add new categories. I click Catalog then Categories/Products. I then click the New Category button and fill in the required fields. I click save and the window defaults to Admin Home, not the Categories/Products list. When I go back to Catalog then Categories/Products the new category hasn't been added. Any help?

Re-install the June2009 security patches. One of the files didn't get installed properly.

Thanks Rod. I have absolutely no idea how to do this. I installed the patch a while ago and lost all my images and would have had to re-insert all my front page info including Shipping & Returns, Privacy Notice, Conditions of Use etc etc. I'm getting a new website built and don't want to have to go through all this again. How can I install the patch without upsetting anything. Consider me a newbie.

If you just follow the instructions provided then you can't go wrong.
Deviate from them in any way then all sorts of unwanted things will happen.

From what I've seen the two most common errors that people make are:

1. installing the patch files into the /includes folder rather than the /admin/includes folder.

2. Failing to install the html_output.php file (due to the fact that a file of this name already exists, and therefore needs to be overwritten with the new one).

The inability to add new categories is usually caused by error#2, so just re-upload this file (from the copy in the patch files).
