Sudden Problems with Paypal since Dec 1???? IPN Handler (Zen Cart v1.2.4)

Is anyone else having problems with the IPN Handler?

We are having a problem is with the Paypal IPN Handler, which does not return the information back to Zencart and an order is not created in Zencart. ie we have the money but no order.

THIS ONLY HAPPENS WITH ORDERS WHERE THE PAYMENT METHOD IS PAYPAL. Our orders where payment is any other method are working perfectly.

This system has been up for over 4 years with no errors or problems, and we have not had any code changes (We are using Zencart 1.2.4!) but we started to get this problems around 1st/2nd December.

We had this problems with the IPN handler once before and we were advised by Paypal it was due to some changes that they had madeand they corrected it. This time Paypal deny all knowledge and politely told us they could not help. :-(

Re: Sudden Problems with Paypal since Dec 1???? IPN Handler (Zen Cart v1.2.4)

One thing I did notice when I did a test order. After the IPN handlers takes the customer back to my site, and we see the Thank You for your order message, I noticed that the order number quoted and the item listed for the notification checkbox IS FROM THE PREVIOUS ORDER THST DID WORK, not from the current order...which is not created anyway.

I just thought this might help with the analysis.

That's merely a result of the order not being released in your store because the IPN hasn't completed properly.

If it stopped working on Dec 1, what changed on your site and/or your hosting server as of that date?
What is PayPal saying about the IPNs? Your account will show the success or failure of IPN notification happening.

Re: Sudden Problems with Paypal since Dec 1???? IPN Handler (Zen Cart v1.2.4)

Hi Dr Byte

We have not made any changes to our site (code changes) in two years. We haven't even added new products for a couple of weeks now.
Our hosting provider (Doteasy) said the following "There was no change to your server or account since May 01, 2009"
This is the IPN history on our Paypal account;

Non Paypal orders are working perfectly.

I can gone thorugh the Paypal checklist provided by Zencart and all is complete.

Appreciate any advice that you can provide! :-)

Have you set your PayPal IPN payment module's "enable debug emails" option to true? What are the debug emails reporting?

Re: Sudden Problems with Paypal since Dec 1???? IPN Handler (Zen Cart v1.2.4)

Unfortunately the Paypal Payment module does not have that option...probably due to the old version of our cart. :-(

Or is it in the code?

This was the last reply from Paypal:

PayPal is sending the responses to your IPN script successfully. We are also receiving an HTTP 200 Ok response from the IPN script. You will want to have your developer check the script to verify it is setup to handle the IPN response properly and update the cart appropriately.

Re: Sudden Problems with Paypal since Dec 1???? IPN Handler (Zen Cart v1.2.4)

I have had this problem in the past where it takes the money and but no order has been released....

.....all my times it has been due to paypal doing updates, or they are having problems their end.....Sometimes the orders do get pushed through once they have fixed the issues!

You could always call the customer to get their order, isnt ideal but at least you can process their order while you/paypal figure out the problem!

Re: Sudden Problems with Paypal since Dec 1???? IPN Handler (Zen Cart v1.2.4)

Thanks Ooba_Scott, I have been hassling Paypal several times per day and they still insist it is the code on my site. I swear I haven't touched the code so I am really stumped how I can work out what the root cause is!

Have emailed customers, but that is an awful lot now as this has been going on for over a week, am worried that I will miss one.

Re: Sudden Problems with Paypal since Dec 1???? IPN Handler (Zen Cart v1.2.4)

And you have no debigging available to turn on in the admin section?

Have you tried running the ipn_test to see if you have actually got a connection with paypal and that it is talking correctly?

Have you double checked the settings in paypal and zen cart to make sure they are all setup correctly?

Getting the debugging to work would be a helpful step!

I swear I haven't touched the code so I am really stumped how I can work out what the root cause is!With each new version of Zen Cart, more and more effective options have been added for troubleshooting the various odd problems that could interrupt the IPN process. Without those tools, it becomes very difficult to help you. That's the main reason why I drew attention to the number of releases that have occurred since the old version you are still using.

Let's try enabling it another way:

  1. Go to Admin->Tools->Install SQL Patch
  2. Copy and paste the following into the box on that screen and click Send:```
    UPDATE configuration set configuration_value='Yes' where configuration_key = 'MODULE_PAYMENT_PAYPAL_IPN_DEBUG';
3. Now do a test PayPal transaction, perhaps for $1.00, and report back with a copy of all the emails you receive while the IPN is processed.

(Later when it's working properly and you want to stop the emails, do steps 1&2 above, replacing the 'Yes' with 'No'.)

Re: Sudden Problems with Paypal since Dec 1???? IPN Handler (Zen Cart v1.2.4)

Hi DrByte

Emails received are the customer Paypal confirmation and the site Paypal confirmation. No order confirmations for either (as usual!) and no order recorded in system.

The following notification emails were received:

0.1. Got past Configuration Load /ipn_main_handler.php
0.2. Got past Session Start /ipn_main_handler.php
0.3. Got past language loads /ipn_main_handler.php

Cheers

Re: Sudden Problems with Paypal since Dec 1???? IPN Handler (Zen Cart v1.2.4)

Okay. Try using this utility: http://www.zen-cart.com/index.php?main_page=product_contrib_info&products_id=860
Follow the instructions there for installation, but when it talks about the /includes/extra_configures/ folder, you'll need to use the /includes/extra_datafiles/ folder instead (due to your older version of Zen Cart).

Then do another test and report back both what you get in email as well as whatever appears in the logs that get generated in your /cache/ folder (remember it must be writable, as the utility instructions say).

Re: Sudden Problems with Paypal since Dec 1???? IPN Handler (Zen Cart v1.2.4)

Hi DrByte

The log Debug created a log file with this as the content;

[12-Dec-2009 14:54:20] PHP Fatal error: Call to a member function get_products() on a non-object in /var/www/html/includes/modules/order_total/ot_loyalty_discount.php on line 83

All other emails the same as previous.

I looked up ot_loyalty_discount.php and have attached it. FRom memory it is not part of the core product, and most of the orders received lately are new customers...ie this would not have been invoked???

Again, I have not made any code changes to the site.

Perhaps I should create a new user and run the test again?

If you're getting blank pages in your Admin area, then put the debug logging utility in your **/admin/**includes/extra_datafiles folder too, so it can turn on the logging for admin-side errors.

Re: Sudden Problems with Paypal since Dec 1???? IPN Handler (Zen Cart v1.2.4)

Well, that was interesting!

This was the error I received after setting up the admin error logging:

[13-Dec-2009 00:26:14] PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function tep_db_query() in /var/www/html/includes/modules/order_total/ot_loyalty_discount.php on line 212

Why would a module, that was installed a couple of years ago suddenly start causing all of this grief...or is there an underlying cause???

Is there a way I can uninstall this module manually?

Re: Sudden Problems with Paypal since Dec 1???? IPN Handler (Zen Cart v1.2.4)

tep_xxxxxx() functions are osCommerce functions, not Zen Cart functions.

The following approach may remove the module far enough to make it stop causing problems:

  1. Delete the /includes/modules/order_total/ot_loyalty_discount.php file
  2. Delete the corresponding language files
  3. In your Admin, go to Admin->Modules->Order Total and be sure it's no longer listed.

That won't do 100% of the cleanup, but it will prevent the bad code from causing trouble since it's deleted from the site.

Re: Sudden Problems with Paypal since Dec 1???? IPN Handler (Zen Cart v1.2.4)

Eureka!

So now I have questions!!!

Why did a module. that was installed over 2 years ago, suddenly go pear shaped?
I downloaded this module from the Zencart web site...have never downloaded from anywhere else, but you suggested that is might have been OsCommerce code??

Thanks very much DrByte for your help...and patience!
