Delete Option Name From All Products?

Is there a way to delete an attribute name that is attached to several products?

I have several hundred products and almost half of them have attributes that I no longer need but every time I try to delete it from the "option name" section it tells me that it is in use, but I don't care that it is in use...I just want to delete it. Any thoughts?
