Help! Nothing is updating in my admin

When I try to make changes in any section of the admin, it just takes me back to the main admin page without saving any changes. Specifically, I was trying to make changes to the paypal payment module, but I tested it on other areas of the admin and nothing is saving.

I don't know how long it's been like this. I did try to install the security patches a few weeks back and they were messing things up so I reverted back to my saved files and decided to just get the site up and running for now as I am helping out a friend and it has taken forever and then go back and deal with the security patch later.

The site is yoganidranews.com

Has anyone else had this issue?

This is quite a common complaint. It relates to the incorrect installation of the June 2009 security patches. Usually it is because the file html_output.php didn't get over-written like it is supposed to.

See my previous reply in this thread.

I will also suggest that your store has actually been broken since you installed the security patches, it is just that you didn't notice the problem until now,

Re: Help! Nothing is updating in my admin

Ok -
I installed the security patch and changed the name of the admin folder. All was well for about 5 minutes. My admin was updating!!! Then all of a sudden I can't pull up any pages in the admin. I go to check out the site and I can't even pull up the home page, it gives a 500 internal server error... what on earth happened?

Re: Help! Nothing is updating in my admin

Check the install of the Security Patches it sounds like you have mixed up the html_output.php for the Catalog and Admin ... they are different and this is a symptom of mixing them up ...

Re: Help! Nothing is updating in my admin

Thank you so much for responding.

If I mixed up files, would it have worked for 5 minutes after I did it?

I am pretty certain I put it in the right place, but how would I be able to tell if I did not?

Re: Help! Nothing is updating in my admin

Compare the files with the original files with something such as Beyond Compare from scootersoftware.com ...

This should help you find if there is a file that is incorrect ...

If you are unable to touch any file in either the Catalog or the Admin of your site, you may want to check with your hosting provider for additional help to see if there is a server issue ...

Re: Help! Nothing is updating in my admin

Again, thank you so so much for your response.

I have not made any changes since I last wrote. Now the site itself is coming up (that must have been a server error).

However when I pull up the admin with the new folder name all the links use the old folder name, so I can't login. Is there a sticky or tutorial that explains all the files you need to change when you change the folder name?

Re: Help! Nothing is updating in my admin

If you changed your /admin directory to another directory name, then you do need to update the file:
/admin/includes/configure.php

and change the references to the /admin/ directory to use the new directory name ...

Re: Help! Nothing is updating in my admin

Thanks for your patience with my newbie issues. I really appreciate the help.

I did find the documentation for that and made the changes...now when I go to my new admin page I get a bunch of errors:

Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: Cannot send session cookie - headers already sent by (output started at /home/content/m/a/d/madeaux/html/my_new_admin_name/includes/configure.php:183) in /home/content/m/a/d/madeaux/html/includes/functions/sessions.php on line 108

(I have replaced my actual new admin name with my_new_admin_name in the above error messages.)

"output started at /home/content/m/a/d/madeaux/html/my_new_admin_name/includes/configure.php:183)" would suggest that you probably edited the configure.php file with a windows program.

The reason for suspecting this, is because the original configure.php file is only about 90 lines, and yours is at least 183. The discrepancy is caused by the different end of line characters being used.

Anyway, as well as the double spacing, this will also cause a blank line to be added to the end of the file, and PHP treats this as an 'output' line, so when the real output is sent you get this error telling you the output has already started.

Solution: re edit your configure.php files (using a plain text editor), making sure that there are no blank lines at the end of the file.

Also check for any missing quote characters (' or "), especially on the lines you have edited, because if one of these is missing it can cause similar results.

Cheers
Rod.

Re: Help! Nothing is updating in my admin

Thank you! I edited it with dreamweaver, and it does look to be double spaced. I took out the blank lines at the end and the error messages went away.

Re: Help! Nothing is updating in my admin

Thanks for the info.

Installed the patch earlier in the day, and it worked fine, then about an hour ago, stopped working and because I was loading/making other changes, I didn't know what the cause was!

Reuploaded the html_output file, and seems to be good again.
