Copy Zencart to another domain?

Hi

I'm trying to copy zencart from one sub domain to another (so I can set one up as a gallery only but want to keep the mods on the original)

I'd like to have two separate admin areas/ passwords for each install so can anybody point me in the right direction?

Can i just copy the original across and change the admin name and password for the copy?

thanks for any help

Re: Copy Zencart to another domain?

Are the Zen Carts going to have separate databases?

There will definitely need to be separate databases if different admin settings are to apply on the "two" sites.

If one database is "shared", any admin settings changed on one site will reflect in BOTH sites.

Exactly why I asked. I was going to suggest Admin Profiles, but the changes will still effect both sites.

can i set one up as a shop and the other as a gallery if they share a database?

I'll be looking after both sites so it doesnt matter about the set up just as long as customers can only buy from one of the sites.

I set up a test shop and tried to just copy all the files over to a subdomain but I think i just ended up with one shop in two places... so i deleted them both.

I dont know anything about programming etc so please keep it simple for this fool

Re: Copy Zencart to another domain?

You can share the database, but keep in mind that you'll only have one admin area and any changes made in the admin will effect both sites.

Re: Copy Zencart to another domain?

Yes, since that's an admin setting. If they share a database, both shops have to be either a normal web shop or a showcase. You can't have one of each.

Re: Copy Zencart to another domain?

do you know which files hold the admin username and passwords? I'm thinking i could set up a new zencart in a subdomain then copy all files from the original installation except these username/password files. if i'm thinking correctly this should give me a full copy of the original site but with a new admin/password? or am i missing something?

You are missing quite a bit...

Admin usernames are housed in the database.

If the database is shared between webshops on the same TLD (which is possible) then ALL DB changes made to one site will apply to the other site - DB changes are *almost *everything that is controlled in the shop admin console, so (for example) ALL images settings (sizes) ALL sidebox settings (positions) will be identical on both sites.

Additionally, if you set your store to SHOWCASE, it will be a showcase for BOTH sites.

... and there are literally HUNDREDS more examples of this.

If your host is so mean and miserly as to only allow you to have ONE database, then you could consider using PREFIXES for the database tables. This will allow you to have ONE database housing TWO (or more) installations.

... or you may consider moving to a host that allows you to have several databases.

Re: Copy Zencart to another domain?

i think i might be misleading you all here.

I want to end up with a copy of zencart in each of two subdomains so i can set ONE of them to Showcase.

The problem i have is that the original zencart shop contains mods that i paid to have written and installed. I'd like to have another zencart (set to showcase) that contains the mods from the original shop.

I dont have a copy of the mods and wouldn't even know where to start to look for them in the files.

I'm looking for the easiest way to copy the original shop to a subdomain so i can then have one zencart set to showcase and the other to a normal shop.

My hosting company will allow me to have more than one database, but obviously i dont have a clue how to go about what i want to do.

Re: Copy Zencart to another domain?

  1. create a folder (subdomain) for the new shop
  2. create a database for the new show
  3. if you want the new shop to have the same products, copy the existing database into the new one.

You can do the above from your webmaster panel (most likely CPanel). Use File Manager for step 1, My SQL databases for step 2 and phpMyAdmin for step 3 (export the existing then import it into the new one).
This tutorial may help https://www.zen-cart.com/tutorials/index.php?article=103

  1. copy all the folders and files from the existing Zen Cart into the new folder/subdomain.

  2. Change the information in the config files to point to the new database. This tutorial will be helpful https://www.zen-cart.com/tutorials/index.php?article=122

Re: Copy Zencart to another domain?

Mary Ellen is pointing you in exactly the direction you need to take.

You will be creating a "clone" site.

I do this often, and the whole process can take less than 10 minutes.

I've done it a number of times myself. It's not a bad idea to "clone" a site for testing purposes. You can try out new mods and templates without touching a live site.
