Stock in shopping cart question

I didn't know how to search for an answer to this question. Sorry.

I want to know what happens when for example: I have one item of stock left and two people put it in there shopping cart. Person A purchases it first. Person B still has it in his shopping cart and a little later decide to by it.
I assume he won't be able to but it but at what point will it be removed from his cart or will he be told that there is no stock?

Im guessing when dude B goes to checkout. But you can use your admin settings to still sell 'out of stock' items.
Admin>Configuartion>Stock

i have my sites set up to NOT display any notice to the customer that items are out of stock.

I've already been told that the stock doesn't decrease until after the transaction is completed.

LOL, I posted too quick.

i had a play but im full of cold (pig flu it feels like) so im not thinking straight.. lol

All i can think of is to try it, if you have a test site.
Set up two fake customer accounts. Create a product with a quantity of 1.
Add the item to both customer carts. Make fake dude A checkout with said item. then try to checkout with fake dude B.
