Site is wider than the page...

Hi, I am having a bit of a problem with my site... On Firefox, on my computer(a laptop), it is the right width, but on SOME PC's it is wider than the screen. I tried it on a few different screens and it seems like there is no rhyme or reason. I need some expert advice and I know I've come to the right place. The site address is www. vipoptics .com

Your main header image is set to 1260px wide, so if the resolution of teh screen you are using is less than this, then the page will be wider than the viewable area!

I run a 17" monitor, at 1280 * 1024, and I can see everything, but if you are using a smaller res screen, then you will have problems. Remember, just because the physical screen size is larger, doesn't always mean that the resolution is better.

Depends entirely on your design. Most of our sites are around 900px wide, set to center of the window. We have a few others which are full width, but the content is then centered within the main body of the design. It's always a bit of a playoff of one thing against the other - do you want a fixed width site with borders, or full width with white space within the design?

I will try the fixed width, but could you explain what the "full width with white space within the design" is?

I'm guessing this means a flexible-width site (where the width resizes according to monitor/browser window size) - in this case, the bigger the viewspace, the more blank space would appear within your design as it resizes

A hybrid approach can be achieved with the css max-width attribute... this basically makes your template resize along with the browser window size, but only up to a certain width, in order to avoid too much white space messing up your design and readability. I think I've seen a few zen cart templates around that do this.

But yes, it all depends on your design. It's fairly safe to consider 1024x768 to be a "low common denominator" monitor resolution these days, so if you're doing a fixed width design, 900px to 960px is a good width (to accomodate window borders and scrollbars, while still having at least minimal margins to avoid looking "crammed").
