my tax not shown unless a user is logged in

Please help.

Tax is not shown included in the total price unless a user is logged in.

I have set in "Configuration/My Store/Display Prices with Tax" to True and @Sales Tax Display Status" to 1.

I am not sure if it is because I have created GST as the Tax code rather than the standard "Sales Tax" that comes with Zen Cart.

I am not sure what to do outside of removing the Tax components completely and adding tax into the price.

Please advise.

Thank you to all that contribute i advance.

Goh Koon Hoek's book is the best place for a sound, easy-to-follow procedure for setting up tax classes and rates...

... but you may not need to do this. As you say, you could put your prices as INCL tax, then don't even bother.

In the UK, if you sell to the general public, the Price Marking Act 2002 compels you to advertise prices INCL tax - so in the UK, there is usually NO NEED to configure taxes (selling to Channel Islands however, can influence this).

In the USA where sales taxes (local, regional, national) can be very complicated, the tax modules are essential.

If in Oz you are obliged to do the same as UK, then don't bother with setting up a tax calculating system.

Prices shown EXCL tax in the UK, are usually in shops that are B2B, where a seller and a buyer need to know the tax component for accounting purposes.

b. Basis of Product Tax = Shipping

Change the setting above to "store".

This will make all products be displayed as GST inclusive (while still showing the actual GST amount).

Schoolboys' suggestion will also work but it won't show the tax component on the invoice/checkout, etc. You may or may not want this anyway.

Please note: Setting the tax as I have suggested will mean that you will also be charging the GST amount on products that you ship overseas.

This could possibly land you in trouble with the tax office (who will want whatever you collect, even though neither you, nor they are entitled to it), but my accountant told me (several years ago) that since overseas customers are not able to use the amount charged as a GST offset anyway the ATO won't have any way of reconcilliating the numbers, so rather than treating the 10% charged to overseas customers as 'GST', just consider it as a 10% markup on your products for overseas orders.

If this doesn't 'sit right' with you or your overseas customers, you can always offer them a 10% discount (manually adjusted) to bring your prices back in line.

As for the problem itself, namely " tax not shown unless a user is logged in" this occurs because until/unless the user is logged in (and therefore has a shipping address associated with their account), zencart doesn't have any way of 'knowing' where people are visiting your site are from.

Hope this helps.

Rod
