Different product layout for subcat?

Hi,

Firstly I'm new and appreciate your help, I've not posted before. I've done lots of searches on both Google and this forum. If this is in the wrong place please kindly let me know and I'll repost elsewhere.

I'm attempting to setup a new shop that sells CD's and MP3 Downloads and sheet music.

When a user is looking in the CD category they can click a product and be presented with a product page and buy that CD.

When a user is looking in the MP3 category they see all the albums as you would in the CD category, but when they click on one, they see a page listing all the tracks on that album for download.

My questions to you are:

  1. Does this mean within the MP3 category, I have subcategories representing each album.

  2. Is it possible/easy to make the products within that subcategory display with a unique template.

  3. How would I go about point 2?

Many thanks in advance, looking forward to sharing with this community.

Ryan.

Did you create them in sub-cats???
How would we know - You didn't provide a link

If they are all in a single cat or subcat you can create a css style specific to that - - Read the readme in your /css folder

Hi,

Thanks for trying to help, I didn't share a link because I had nothing that I could show you that would have helped.

Cheers for trying anyway.

Nothing in your opinion - - the many here are extremely adept at finding things that are nt apparent
Being not apparent, they are not in your post

Re: Different product layout for subcat?

At the time I had the default template installed and not a lot else, by not a lot I mean I'd just about managed to get the look and feel I wanted.

I appreciate that you would have wanted a link anyway, but I'm telling you that it would have been pointless. I appreciate your attempt at help, but I have to say that you're need to correct in this manner and talk down to me is not appreciated.

I look forward to giving back to this community the things that I've learned in the future, hopefully I'll be able to when our store goes live!

I read this as informative andd not condecending....
If you read many posts here - - There are a lot of posters that uncover issues/things seperate from what was asked

Sorry that you interpreted it as not informative

Re: Different product layout for subcat?

That's OK,

Thanks and best wishes with what you do. In case anyone else stumbles across this and it sounds like something they wish to do, the solution would appear to be to make your products 'music products' within a category as normal. You can then attach a media collection to the product for sampling and playback (although I've ended up writing a Javascript player and I'm going to rewrite some of the PHP to generate the desired html.) You can then also attach attributes to the product so that each track can be bought separately. I'm probably going to allow check boxes, but then try and come up with a nifty add to cart link that allows each track to be added separately without navigating away from the page.

There's an excellent guide on the basics here:
