Why do I need to change folder permissions 777 on the folder before install?

I installed zencart on other hosts(eg.bluehost hostmonster etc.) do not need to change folder permissions(755)
why do I need to change the permissions 777 on the folder in my vps(centos+cpanel) then install zencart?
ps. Suexec have turned on

This is fully dependant upon server configuration and not a ZenCart issue
ZenCart pnly needs write acces during install - If server allows this with 755 then ok if not then 777 is required
