Need to redirect, can't find .htaccess - help?

Hi,

So I've moved (or rather duplicated) my webshop to another domain, and I need to redirect the old one to the new one. I am absolutely clueless, been trying to figure out how to set up a 301 - but I can't even find the .htaccess....

Please help?

I'm in the process of doing the same. Basically you have to make the file yourself and put it in the site root. Here is a good article on it: http://www.stevenhargrove.com/redirect-web-pages/

Re: Need to redirect, can't find .htaccess - help?

Oh wow, thank you! :)

One more question, though, my shop is in hjemmemamma.com/nettbutikk - I'd put the .htacccess inn /nettbutikk, right? And then delete the rest of the files?

Re: Need to redirect, can't find .htaccess - help?

You put the htaccess in the roots of the directory you want to redirect so if you want to redirect http://www.example.com/ to http://www.example.com/store/ you would put the htaccess in the root of example or the public_html on most servers.

Re: Need to redirect, can't find .htaccess - help?

So to redirect hjemmemamma.com/nettbutikk to newdomain.com, I put the htaccess in the root of hjemmemamma.com? confused

Will a 301 redirect every single page to the new single page, or do they all get to the index site?

Re: Need to redirect, can't find .htaccess - help?

Please, guys, I really need help here...

Just tried to figure it out, after hours of reading, but it just won't work.

I made a .htaccess with this code:

redirectMatch 301 ^/nettbutikk/ http://www.mammabutikken.no

And it worked, except for the fact that EVERYTHING on my old domain but the main site has gone 404 now!

I've removed the htaccess and hopefully it'll go back to normal soon - but how do I make https://www.hjemmemamma.com/nettbutikk go to https://www.mammabutikken.no?

Re: Need to redirect, can't find .htaccess - help?

Never mind. I DID have a htaccess, invisible. So I wrote over that without knowing, messed up the site, spent the entire day looking for the culprit, and now everything's ok. :)

Re: Need to redirect, can't find .htaccess - help?

How did you find the htaccess file?
I'm trying to go live with my store and spent a couple hours not being able to log into my administration area. Talk about sick to my stomach. The problem was I changed my permissions, so changed them back so others couldn't write, letting me back in.
But I'm still wanting to go from the few html pages I have already published to the zen cart pages with shopping. Now I'm more spooked than ever about trying things.
I thought I saved the admin/includes/configure.php file with new folder names, (as suggested in the tutorials) after moving my zencart folder up one level. Didn't happen, and they wouldn't open, so I moved them back. Maybe I should try the tutorial process again, but this time copying instead of moving??
I read Steve's webmaster codes on redirecting. Should I try the php version? But what file or folder to put it in?
Advice and direction would be greatly appreciated. Whew ~~

Re: Need to redirect, can't find .htaccess - help?

Back again -- I was able to copy the zen folder into a new one called store, and edit the configure.php files mentioned in the tutorials.
I would hate to screw this up, and I have no experience with re-direction in any format.

I just had to configure the ftp-program to show invisible files, and then it finally showed up! :)

Re: Need to redirect, can't find .htaccess - help?

I did find it, using my host's file manager. But, it didn't redirect and open the cart.
Instead I put a link on my index.html -- and I could get zencart to show up, but no SSL to protect my customers. I generated a couple keys and certificates at my host, plus I had my paypal certificate, but like the tutorial said, changing the php reading to "true" will only make your pages disappear, which they did. I tried moving the SSL folder into the zencart folder and that didn't make it work better either.
So, paypal won't work.
