New to ZenCart..

My company is thinking of setting up an e-commerce website. I already have designed and run a few websites for them for the past 4 or 5 years now. None of them have any type of shopping on it.

I'm doing some research and a lot of the templates I've found use ZenCart.

I see information about integrating USPS shipping. Are there modules that will allow me to add in UPS also?

How does it work with weight and boxes? I'm assuming I need to enter the weight of all my items for the software to know, but how do boxes work? Obviously shipping to packages costs more than shipping one.

Search this site for Template Monster - and avoid getting duped

Both are part of a default install

Shipping is normally a compromise where you benefit on most all orders and not on only a few -
There are settings for max weight per box and it splits to 2 boxes or 3...

Re: New to ZenCart..

Thanks for the info and speedy reply.

As for Template Monster and being duped.. do you mean I shouldn't shop there for a template? That's where I was looking. Should I look elsewhere?

I don't mind if the template is the same as others have purchased. I'll modify the graphics for my site. It's just that I have no experience in PHP, only HTML.. that's why I was hoping for a pre-made site.

Re: New to ZenCart..

After you're finished the search Kobra suggested, you can look at the free templates available for Zen Cart at http://(sorry, site offline)/

You don't really need php knowledge (it helps, but you can get started without it). css (stylesheet) is more important for the look of the site.

If you have no experience of PHP - and you buy and install a Template Monster template - you will spend your life in this forum (mostly in tears) begging for help...

... which most of us can't/won't be able to give you, because we dont have hundreds of spare hours to unpick the horrendous code that TM developers write into their versions of zencart.

For starters, don't pay much attention to the graphical elements at this stage. Stop thinking about the paintwork, and focus on the power-plant.

Install zencart and spend your first few weeks getting to grips with the FUNCTIONS and BEHAVIOUR of the system.

Then, when you have a little bit of the more important knowledge, start thinking about a simple design interface. Then call in here for specific layout help - and because you've retained STANDARD CORE BEHAVIOUR, we will be in a good position to offer help.

Re: New to ZenCart..

Thanks for the info. I did search for some Template Monster stuff here on the forum.. had to dig through some stuff.

Thanks for the link to the free templates. I'm going to give one a try. Seems I can get into this a lot cheaper than I thought since I won't really need any PHP editing software like Dreamweaver. As it is now, I code all my CSS/HTML stuff in Notepad. We've already got a domain we're going to use.

Re: New to ZenCart..

There's no HTML to edit. You'll be working with either css or php. The HTML is built on the fly depending on what's requested.

To edit php and css, use a good text editor like Notepad++ or Crimson Editor. Both are available free on the net.

Use an FTP client to transfer files back and forth between your computer and the website. Filezilla is good (and also free).

Of course this means you'll have to have Zen Cart unzipped on your computer, but that serves as a "backup" of the work you've put into your site, so it's a plus. :D

Dreamweaver is not an editor for php....it is designed only for html
