general questions about shipping configuration

Hi -

I've progressed to the point where I'm ready to tackle shipping configuration for my site. The choices and options are almost bewildering. Before I start asking a bunch of questions, is there a general tutorial on shipping? I couldn't find one. If there isn't one, I'll just ask a few questions here.

Your best bet is to get the comprehensive manual (ebook). I have used it since joining this forum for zc 1.3.7.1 and 1.3.8a. Well worth the money.

Point taken. For now, though, I'll start with just one question (more to follow, I'm sure): how do I eliminate the "best way" option?

After looking at this a bit more closely, I now realize my question didn't really make any sense. Let me try again, with a bit of background:

My shop is going to offer products that come in a very wide variety of sizes and weights (and value). Would I be correct in assuming that the "per item" shipping option is probably not a great idea?

Also, the last item in the shipping FAQ seems to hint at the per unit method of shipping, but doesn't really explain it outright. Can someone summarize it for me, and tell me why it might be preferred over simply computing shipping by weight via the carrier options (USPS and UPS)?
