Creating popup windows from images

I'm trying to add a live help chat to my site. I have a custom sidebar that allows me to add whatever code I want, and I already generated the code for an aim "wimzi" which works well. I first put the wimzi chat box directly in the sidebar, but I feel it's a bit too big for the page, and too small for the wimzi. So instead, I would like to have an image that the customer clicks on and then a properly sized popup window opens with the wimzi chat.

I created a javascript that works correctly with the wimzi popup in link form (see header link "chat"), but when I try to add the image the popup link no longer works and I just have an image that does nothing. (see sidebar live help image) Any ideas?
