categores and sort order

I have a lot of categories, sub-categories and sub sub-categories, which also make me have a continued line of products.

I want the categories, sub-categories and sub sub-categories in a certain order. Putting a number in the categories is working but not for the others, how do I handle this.

Which "others"? Subcategories or products? You can assign sort orders to each category, subcat and product at the bottom of its editing page; product displays can be set to sort in a number of different ways, including by assigned sort order.

I have tried this but it did not move the order in which they are in, for instance in categories it did, in sub-categories it did not.

Also, if an item comes in more then one color with images, how do we use that.

How were the categories and subcats displaying, and how did you expect them to change? And where are you talking about - categories sidebox, center column, ??

Different colors of a product - completely different question. For that you can use attributes, and display an image for each color below the main image and description (in the product info page).

Let's say for instance I want Billard Lights first, then Kitchen Lights.

Some of these are in other categories as well.

It may be due to the way your typing displayed in the post (no indents), but I still don't know what you expect to happen that is not happening. If I assume that the first item in each set/pair is a top category and the following are subcats in that top cat, setting the sort order of the subcats should work.

You really need to re-enter that list with markers so we can tell how you intend the organization.
Much better would be to see your site. I do presume from your description that you are talking about the categories sidebox? That needs clarification as well.

Hmm... I see that all of the items below Chandeliers are doubled, which indicates that this is a copy/paste of the center column category listing (no images, so the alt text is showing above the name).

What is your setting for Configuration > Layout Settings > Categories/Products Display Sort Order?

A note about what worked to get your desired display order might help others with the same question.

Mine is set to 0, is that correct.

If you want the sort order number to take precedence, yes, that would be correct.

Somewhere on that listing is where I made a change last night and then it started working, do not ask me what. I was just trying everything.
