erm.. yes.
Though I'm not sure I really understand the question to be honest. How else do you expect to communicate with a customer?

The FUNCTIONS that drive email are server-based and have nothing to do with zencart.
When you install zencart, it needs to be configured to work within the email system that is already set up on the server.
All web hosting accounts these days will include mail services, so it's a case of setting up POP and SMTP mail accounts first.
One that is done, you configure ZC to operate using these accounts (or any email address, actually), and select the mail transport system that is operational on your server.

I have to correct you on this one.
There are some GoDaddy accounts I know of for example that DON'T include email. It took me a while to figure it out, but so far so good you can spoof it using [email protected] as your send address. Ultimately though that's as much use as a chocolate fireguard if you intend to make a business out of your site

One could effectively argue that GoDaddy accounts aren't real hosting accounts anyway, but I digress.

I'll see your correction and raise you one :-)
I'm totally with Schoolboys comments on this one.

I find this VERY hard to believe. Not even godaddy are foolish enough to implement any kind of user account that doesn't automatically include an email address on their own server(s) for billing and other 'important information" emails .. in fact it is probably harder for them to NOT provide such an account.
This however doesn't have any bearing on whether an outgoing mail server is available for use by zencart, other ecommerce sites, etc.
Most sites these days would be severely crippled without outgoing email capabilitiy, even if only used for sending out lost password messages..
It isn't a requirement that the webhost also support inbound emails. Zencart doesn't make use of them in any way.

As usual, I did a little research before composing this response, and found many examples of PHP code that people are using to send emails via their godaddy sites, but sadly, didn't find a single one that indicated that "There are some GoDaddy accounts I know of for example that DON'T include email".
I acknowledge that goddady apparently don't make it easy to utilise their mail server via PHP, but that isn't quite the same as not being available.
Anyway, to simply answer the OP's question...
"Is email hosting needed for email in zencart to work? "
No, you will not need email hosting (defined as incoming emails) to run zencart - you can use your existing email address as given by your ISP, or even a yahoo or gmail account.
Your webhost will need to provide some kind of access to their outgoing mail server in order for zencart to function, and I don't know of any webhost that doesn't support this as part of their package (with the possible exception being of some godaddy accounts, and perhaps similar difficulties with other 'budget' hosts). .

Rod as always stumbles in....
Just do a google search for 'zen cart emails godaddy', you'll see what I mean.

Just to clarify - there are a few extremely regressive hosting companies that do not provide an SMTP mail service with their hosting (but only a few).

I already did that - and if you read my entire post instead of just the first line you would have seen that I told you that.
However, you did provide me with a search query I hadn't used (I felt that in an effort to find out whether your claims that "There are some GoDaddy accounts I know of for example that DON'T include email" were valid or not I'd have a better chance of proving you RIGHT by not limiting my searches to zen-cart specific).
Anyway, I have decided to humour you and typed in the search query that you suggested, and still didn't find any reference to support your claims.
I've now searched twice. Time for you to defend your claim.** I defy you to supply a link to support your bogus claims. **
FWIW.... godaddy accounts are specified thus:
ECONOMY PLAN - 100 Email Accounts
DELUXE PLAN - 500 Email Accounts
UNLIMITED+ PLAN - 500 Email Accounts
GoDaddy Email Send Rate Limit & SMTP Restrictions
The following restrictions apply when sending emails from a web site / domain hosted by GoDaddy:
GoDaddy email send limit for shared web hosting - no more than 250 relays (recipients) per day. You can purchase additional relays, in packs of 50
GoDaddy email send limit for dedicated servers or dedicated virtual servers - no more than 1000 relays (recipients) per day.
Please enlighten us oh wise one, which goddady account should we avoid because they "DON'T include email" (your exact words).
Actually, since you also stated that these are accounts** that you know of** ("There are some GoDaddy accounts I know of") you should be able to provide an answer without even looking it up (Although I you welcome to do so in order to check your facts, I would).
Ignoring this simple request after the research I have done will be taken as an admission that you have made your claim without merit.
I'm all for the godaddy bashing - they usually deserve it, but making bogus claims against them can only harm your reputation.
No offence taken. No offence given. As usual I'm just wishing to validate/verify facts, and I really did start out with the intent of proving your claim (rather than disproving it) - It would have given me yet another reason for advising against godaddy (as if I really needed another reason), but the simple fact is I haven't found a shred of evidence to suggest that what you stated was true. :(

Name one. (and if possible, can you also verify that Godaddy is one such host or not?)
Thanks,

Sorry, it can't be helped ... it is just a natural reaction that occurs when the bullshot levels exceed the threshhold limit of an arrogant p rick.
Not much more for me to say really, other than perhaps an apology to the OP for cluttering his/her mailbox with "pointless updates".
Oooopps... just did it again ....:D

Tis good to see you have a sense of humour about it all.
The important thing though is, did you actually make sense of the answers in regards to your question?
As a side issue, if we've managed to turn you away from godaddy (email issues or not) then we've done a good thing. :-)
Cheers
