Deleting a category - Just checking

Hi! I am in the process of building a site for a bead shop and when I first started I thought to have a top category called Beads with all the different types underneath this. I now realise that the Beads Page has no purpose and would like to remove it. When I click on delete in the Admin I get the following message "Linked Products whose Master Categories ID are deleted will not price properly. You should first assure that when deleting a Category that contains Linked Products that you reset the Product(s) Master Categories ID to another Category before removing a Category", which is very scary. I have moved all relevant subcategories to top and I am just wanting to make sure that all will be well before I delete the category Beads which has just one subcategory that is empty and I do not want.

Site is http://www.broomebeads.com.au. Thanks

....reset the Product(s) Master Categories ID to another Category before removing a Category

That basically explains it. You will need to check the former subcats for their linking status and adjust accordingly. Products with a yellow dot indicate that are linked.

Re: Deleting a category - Just checking

Thanks for your response but as I have never done this procedure I am unsure as to how/where to reset the category id. Linked means that the subcategory is linked to the top category or does it mean the category is linked to other categories and is this something zen cart does or something that I would instigate, ie is it used for searches? Sorry for being so vague but its like not knowing to ask the right question until you know.

Re: Deleting a category - Just checking

Have you ever "copy/linked" a product to another (sub)category? If not, the products will have only one category which will be the master, and you have nothing to worry about.

"Linked" means that a product which was created in one category will also show up in another category. This is different from "duplicated", which creates two separate products that look the same to start with.

Thanks for that. I have never linked another product with another or is there some tutorial or thread I can read to find out how to do it and its purpose, lol.

Re: Deleting a category - Just checking

Sometimes a product can reasonably be classified under two or more categories; having separate products for those categories would be a logistical nightmare. Linking allows one product to be shown wherever appropriate. Look in the tutorials for more info.
