Adding a Cookie to Category and Product Pages for affiliates

Hi guys, i'm going to explain what we're planning to do as i think it maybe helpful to others.

what im trying to achieve:
we're going to be taking on another new affiliate network and we need to have tracking cookies to prevent duplicate commissions going to both networks. We've added a 'click append' to both affiliate networks (this can usually be added in the admin of your affiliate network or requested). e.g. source=affiliate1. so i'm picking this value up in a cookie and storing this. When at checkout we check to see is this cookie exists and then if it does we check the value and then use the appropiate affiliate conversion code.

What i need guidance with:
Which files do i need to edit in order to create my cookie on product and category pages?

Im trying to add cookie for similar purpose (tracking efficiency of adwords and other mediums like affiliates. However I'd like to attach extra column to orders to know from which source it has come. So Im following this thred http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showthread.php?t=88550 but insted od delivery date I want to put cookie.
I'm bit worry if cookie will work during the session???

well the cookie i'm creating shouldn't affect any session as its picking up from an external link through and only be stored once they initially join the site.

I'm looking for someone who can point in the right direction as to the correct files i should be modifying to do this?

you have to concider session as the user when make purchase must log in (session) and you must be able to store cookie while user is logged in and to save it in database after order is placed (this is tha way what i'm going to do)

Ok ill wait for one of the zen people to guide me to which files i need to edit
