Cannot add anything to shopping cart!

I see the products I put up with the prices, but cannot see where to click on them to add them to cart to purchase.

You've evidently put your shop into showcase mode instead of having it operate as a real store the way it does out-of-the-box.

I didnt know that I did that.......How do I change that?

No,
I just checked in admin and its running in normal mode.
There is no add to cart box displayed in any of the modes, normal, showcase with prices, or without.

Okay, then maybe you change the original settings in Admin->Catalog->Product Types->Product General->Edit->This Product can be added to cart. Normally that box should be checked for Product-General.

I have the same problem though the settings in admin are correct (box "product can be added to cart" checked)

the strange thing is that it sometimes work but most of the time it doesn't

there is no error message, neither on screen nor in apache log

and the same problem exists with removing a product from the shopping cart

I'm running Zen Cart 1.3.7 with PHP 5.3.6
I know I should update but it would take ages to check all the changes that have been made in the theme and I really need to find a solution quick (if one exists of course)

It was working well previously on an old Debian but the problem started when I moved the site to a new Archlinux box

You need to upgrade - that version is not compatible with php5.3+ and it is vulnerable to some nasty exploits.
