Can I add Fractional Qty's?

I have a product that I would like to offer a fractional qty for e.g., a person can buy a 0.5 or 1.0 qty - its a sponsorship donation. I've set up the qty for the product for .5, it displays this in the qty box but when added to the cart gives and error that product has been changed to qty 1 (full price) because product is unavailable in fractional qtys. What am I not setting up correctly?
