Implementing Google Rich Snippets.

clydejones:

it should produce the following: (or something similar)

<img src="includes/templates/template_default/images/stars_5.gif" alt="5 of 5 Stars!" title=" 5 of 5 Stars! " width="90" height="20" class="rating" />

Re: Implementing Google Rich Snippets.

Hello.
Does anyone know how to implement Google Rich Snippets in Zen Cart?
Here is info on how to use it in HTML:
http://www.google.com/support/webmas...n&answer=99170

I'd like to add categories and rating to my site's info (when it comes up in search results).
I have seen it done on other e-commerce sites coming up in Google search results.
So, looks like it can be done, I am just not sure how to implement it in PHP...

Thanks.

Re: Implementing Google Rich Snippets.

If you are using a span/div then add the following

property="v:rating" content=""

where content has the value. If you use % then it will automatically assume it to be out of 100.

If using a img tag

<img property="v:rating" src="four_star_rating.gif" content="4" />

Re: Implementing Google Rich Snippets.

This is a new development - Google recently announced it would be using micro-data in the schema.org format for rich snippet search results.

(Google still supports your existing rich snippets markup, though.)

Question is - how much does this potentially affect Zen Cart installations, and are there plans to implement this new system either by contributor module or in future core functions?

Re: Implementing Google Rich Snippets.

Hi

We all need to get our heads around implementing "rich snippets" in Google as these are shown in google search listings now and stick above other listings which don't implement this as there is a graphical star rating for the product on the search listing.

This threadwhich (deceased) Clyde Jones has partially answered but has anyone sucessfully implemented it? I'm sure the code is about 90% complete.

Regards
Tracey

Re: Implementing Google Rich Snippets.

Google (and other Search Engines) place more and more importance on marking your code with Rich Snippets, and it give you a significant advantage in getting the right kind of traffic.

There was a good thread on addingGoogle Rich Snippets here, and although most of the code was written, it wasn't quite complete. Since that thread now appears to be closed, I thought I'd start a new one, to see if someone is willing to have another crack at it?

Thanks a lot guys!

Re: Implementing Google Rich Snippets.

I have now added rich snippets to the main header, the reviews sidebox, the reviews pages, the products pages across the board. Is anyone still interested in this?

Re: Implementing Google Rich Snippets.

SO close to getting rich snippets working on a products review page, I just need a bit of help with this:

I need to vary the OTHER_REVIEWS_RATING_STARS_XXXX_ALT depending on the 'reviews_rating' value, so

existing code is

<h3><?php echo zen_image(DIR_WS_TEMPLATE_IMAGES . 'stars_' . $review_info->fields['reviews_rating'] . '.gif', sprintf(TEXT_OF_5_STARS, $review_info->fields['reviews_rating']). OTHER_REVIEWS_RATING_STARS_FIVE_ALT, '', '', 'class="rating"') ; ?></h3>

I need it to do something like this

<h3><?php if ($reviews_rating = '5') { echo zen_image(DIR_WS_TEMPLATE_IMAGES . 'stars_' . $review_info->fields['reviews_rating'] . '.gif', sprintf(TEXT_OF_5_STARS, $review_info->fields['reviews_rating']). OTHER_REVIEWS_RATING_STARS_FIVE_ALT, '', '', 'class="rating"') ; } else { if ($reviews_rating = '4') { echo zen_image(DIR_WS_TEMPLATE_IMAGES . 'stars_' . $review_info->fields['reviews_rating'] . '.gif', sprintf(TEXT_OF_5_STARS, $review_info->fields['reviews_rating']). OTHER_REVIEWS_RATING_STARS_FOUR_ALT, '', '', 'class="rating"') ; } else { if ($reviews_rating = '3') { echo zen_image(DIR_WS_TEMPLATE_IMAGES . 'stars_' . $review_info->fields['reviews_rating'] . '.gif', sprintf(TEXT_OF_5_STARS, $review_info->fields['reviews_rating']). OTHER_REVIEWS_RATING_STARS_THREE_ALT, '', '', 'class="rating"') ; } else { if ($reviews_rating = '2') { echo zen_image(DIR_WS_TEMPLATE_IMAGES . 'stars_' . $review_info->fields['reviews_rating'] . '.gif', sprintf(TEXT_OF_5_STARS, $review_info->fields['reviews_rating']). OTHER_REVIEWS_RATING_STARS_TWO_ALT, '', '', 'class="rating"') ; } else { if ($reviews_rating = '1') { echo zen_image(DIR_WS_TEMPLATE_IMAGES . 'stars_' . $review_info->fields['reviews_rating'] . '.gif', sprintf(TEXT_OF_5_STARS, $review_info->fields['reviews_rating']). OTHER_REVIEWS_RATING_STARS_ONE_ALT, '', '', 'class="rating"') ; } } } } } ?></h3>

which obviously isn't right

If I can sort this out then I've cracked rich snippets

Re: Implementing Google Rich Snippets.

Sorted: code that works is

<h3><?php if ($review_info->fields['reviews_rating'] == '5') { echo zen_image(DIR_WS_TEMPLATE_IMAGES . 'stars_' . $review_info->fields['reviews_rating'] . '.gif', sprintf(TEXT_OF_5_STARS, $review_info->fields['reviews_rating']). OTHER_REVIEWS_RATING_STARS_FIVE_ALT, '', '', 'class="rating"') ; }

if ($review_info->fields['reviews_rating'] == '4') {
echo zen_image(DIR_WS_TEMPLATE_IMAGES . 'stars_' . $review_info->fields['reviews_rating'] . '.gif', sprintf(TEXT_OF_5_STARS, $review_info->fields['reviews_rating']). OTHER_REVIEWS_RATING_STARS_FOUR_ALT, '', '', 'class="rating"') ; }

if ($review_info->fields['reviews_rating'] == '3') {
echo zen_image(DIR_WS_TEMPLATE_IMAGES . 'stars_' . $review_info->fields['reviews_rating'] . '.gif', sprintf(TEXT_OF_5_STARS, $review_info->fields['reviews_rating']). OTHER_REVIEWS_RATING_STARS_THREE_ALT, '', '', 'class="rating"') ; }

if ($review_info->fields['reviews_rating'] == '2') {
echo zen_image(DIR_WS_TEMPLATE_IMAGES . 'stars_' . $review_info->fields['reviews_rating'] . '.gif', sprintf(TEXT_OF_5_STARS, $review_info->fields['reviews_rating']). OTHER_REVIEWS_RATING_STARS_TWO_ALT, '', '', 'class="rating"') ; }

if ($review_info->fields['reviews_rating'] == '1') {
echo zen_image(DIR_WS_TEMPLATE_IMAGES . 'stars_' . $review_info->fields['reviews_rating'] . '.gif', sprintf(TEXT_OF_5_STARS, $review_info->fields['reviews_rating']). OTHER_REVIEWS_RATING_STARS_ONE_ALT, '', '', 'class="rating"') ; }
?></h3>

Is the above change the only thing needed to get the zen-cart reviews as rich snipped review in google?

Re: Implementing Google Rich Snippets.

Has anyone managed to do this for zencart 1.3.8.a the original code is different, (would be great to get this working for all the Zencart community!)

<?php echo zen_break_string(zen_output_string_protected(stripslashes($reviews->fields['reviews_text'])), 35, '-<br />').'</p><br /><br />'. sprintf(TEXT_REVIEW_RATING, zen_image(DIR_WS_TEMPLATE_IMAGES . 'stars_' . $reviews->fields['reviews_rating'] . '.gif', sprintf(TEXT_OF_5_STARS, $reviews->fields['reviews_rating'])), sprintf(TEXT_OF_5_STARS, $reviews->fields['reviews_rating'])); ?>

Re: Implementing Google Rich Snippets.

I hope this is posted in the correct place on the forum..
I am trying to follow a tutorial in melanie prough's blog that is in reference to customizing Google snippets with microdata. My template code (in most cases) did not match the code in her tutorial exactly. I am posting the changes I made in hopes that I can find out what I did wrong. My attempt at adding this code was unsuccessful in that, when I used the google tools to check it, no data was found;

CHANGE #1
These changes are in includes/templates/my_template-templates/tpl_product_info_display.php
Her Instructions...
Locate your product name

<h1 id="productName"><?php echo $products_name; ?></h1> **Now wrap it in the property name tag** <h1 id="productName"><span itemprop="name"><?php echo $products_name; ?></span></h1>

What I actually did...
Changed this...

<h1 id="productName" class="productGeneral"><?php echo $products_name; ?></h1>

To this....

<h1 id="productName" class="productGeneral"><span itemprop="name"><?php echo $products_name; ?></span></h1>

Change #2
Her Instructions...
Locate your price

<h2 id="productPrices"> <?php // base price if ($show_onetime_charges_description == 'true') { $one_time = '<span >' . TEXT_ONETIME_CHARGE_SYMBOL . TEXT_ONETIME_CHARGE_DESCRIPTION . '</span><br />'; } else { $one_time = ''; } echo $one_time . ((zen_has_product_attributes_values((int)$_GET['products_id']) and $flag_show_product_info_starting_at == 1) ? TEXT_BASE_PRICE : '') . zen_get_products_display_price((int)$_GET['products_id']); ?></h2>

Now we will wrap it in the price property

<h2 id="productPrices"> <?php // base price if ($show_onetime_charges_description == 'true') { $one_time = '<span >' . TEXT_ONETIME_CHARGE_SYMBOL . TEXT_ONETIME_CHARGE_DESCRIPTION . '</span><br />'; } else { $one_time = ''; } echo $one_time . ((zen_has_product_attributes_values((int)$_GET['products_id']) and $flag_show_product_info_starting_at == 1) ? TEXT_BASE_PRICE : '') . '<meta itemprop="currency" content="USD" /><span itemprop="price">' . zen_get_products_display_price((int)$_GET['products_id']) . '</span>'; ?></h2>

What I actually did...
Changed this..
.

<h2 id="productPrices" class="productGeneral"> <?php // base price if ($show_onetime_charges_description == 'true') { $one_time = '<span >' . TEXT_ONETIME_CHARGE_SYMBOL . TEXT_ONETIME_CHARGE_DESCRIPTION . '</span><br />'; } else { $one_time = ''; } echo $one_time . ((zen_has_product_attributes_values((int)$_GET['products_id']) and $flag_show_product_info_starting_at == 1) ? TEXT_BASE_PRICE : '') . zen_get_products_display_price((int)$_GET['products_id']); ?></h2>

To this....

<h2 id="productPrices" class="productGeneral"> <?php // base price if ($show_onetime_charges_description == 'true') { $one_time = '<span >' . TEXT_ONETIME_CHARGE_SYMBOL . TEXT_ONETIME_CHARGE_DESCRIPTION . '</span><br />'; } else { $one_time = ''; } echo $one_time . ((zen_has_product_attributes_values((int)$_GET['products_id']) and $flag_show_product_info_starting_at == 1) ? TEXT_BASE_PRICE : '') .'<meta itemprop="currency" content="USD" /><span itemprop="price">' . zen_get_products_display_price((int)$_GET['products_id']) . '</span>'; ?></h2>

Change #3
Her Instructions...
Locate your product description

<div id="productDescription"><?php echo stripslashes($products_description); ?></div>

and wrap it in the description property tag

<div id="productDescription"><span itemprop="description"><?php echo stripslashes($products_description); ?></span></div>

What I actually did...
Changed this...

<div id="productDescription" class="productGeneral biggerText"><?php echo stripslashes($products_description); ?></div>

To this....

<div id="productDescription" class="productGeneral biggerText"><span itemprop="description"><?php echo stripslashes($products_description); ?></span></div>

Change #4
Her Instructions...
Locate the manufacturer's function

<?php echo (($flag_show_product_info_manufacturer == 1 and !empty($manufacturers_name)) ? '<li>' . TEXT_PRODUCT_MANUFACTURER . $manufacturers_name . '</li>' : '') . "\n"; ?>

now you will wrap it in either the brand or manufacturer property tag, whichever is most appropriate for your cart

<?php echo (($flag_show_product_info_manufacturer == 1 and !empty($manufacturers_name)) ? '<li>' . TEXT_PRODUCT_MANUFACTURER . '<span itemprop="brand">' . $manufacturers_name . '</span></li>' : '') . "\n"; ?>

What I actually did...
Changed this...

<?php echo (($flag_show_product_info_manufacturer == 1 and !empty($manufacturers_name)) ? '<li><span class="product-info-label">' . TEXT_PRODUCT_MANUFACTURER . '</span>' . $manufacturers_name . '</li>' : '') . "\n"; ?>

To this....

<?php echo (($flag_show_product_info_manufacturer == 1 and !empty($manufacturers_name)) ? '<li><span class="product-info-label">' . TEXT_PRODUCT_MANUFACTURER . '</span>' . '<span itemprop="brand">' .$manufacturers_name . '</span></li>' : '') . "\n"; ?>

Change #5
Her Instructions...
Using the identifier model. Locate your model number line
.

<?php echo (($flag_show_product_info_model == 1 and $products_model !='') ? '<li>' . TEXT_PRODUCT_MODEL . $products_model . '</li>' : '') . "\n"; ?>

Now we will wrap it in the mpn (manufacturers part number) identifier property

<?php echo (($flag_show_product_info_model == 1 and $products_model !='') ? '<li>' . TEXT_PRODUCT_MODEL . '<span itemprop="identifier" content="mpn:' . $products_model . '">' . $products_model . '</span></li>' : '') . "\n"; ?>

What I actually did...
Changed this...

<?php echo (($flag_show_product_info_model == 1 and $products_model !='') ? '<li><span class="product-info-label">' . TEXT_PRODUCT_MODEL . '</span>' . $products_model . '</li>' : '') . "\n"; ?>

To this....

<?php echo (($flag_show_product_info_model == 1 and $products_model !='') ? '<li><span class="product-info-label">' . TEXT_PRODUCT_MODEL . '</span>' . '<span itemprop="identifier" content="mpn:' . $products_model . '">' . $products_model . '</span></li>' : '') . "\n"; ?>

Change #6
Her Instructions..
Using the quantity identifier. Locate your quantity line.

<?php echo (($flag_show_product_info_quantity == 1) ? '<li>' . $products_quantity . TEXT_PRODUCT_QUANTITY . '</li>' : '') . "\n"; ?>

Now we will wrap it in the quantity property

<?php echo (($flag_show_product_info_quantity == 1) ? '<li>' . '<span itemprop="quantity">' . $products_quantity . '</span>' . TEXT_PRODUCT_QUANTITY . '</li>' : '') . "\n"; ?>

What I actually did...
Changed this...

<?php echo (($flag_show_product_info_quantity == 1) ? '<li><span class="product-info-label">'. TEXT_PRODUCT_QUANTITY . ': </span>' . $products_quantity . '</li>' : '') . "\n"; ?>

To this....

<?php echo (($flag_show_product_info_quantity == 1) ? '<li><span class="product-info-label">'. TEXT_PRODUCT_QUANTITY . ': </span>' . '<span itemprop="quantity">' .$products_quantity . '</span>' .'</li>' : '') . "\n"; ?>

Change #7
Her Instructions..
Using the Availability property
Just a quick way to dynamically deliver the value of in stock our not from quantity.

In the list you just edited for model and such locate the closing </ul> tag and on the line right above it add the following. Acceptable values are (in_stock, out_of_stock, instore_only or preorder)

<?php if ($products_quantity > 0) { ?><li><span itemprop="availability" content="in_stock">In Stock</span></li><?php }?><?php if ($products_quantity == 0) { ?><li><span itemprop="availability" content="out_of_stock">Out of Stock</span></li><?php }?>

Here is what I added
***the last bit of code before the closing </ul> tag was..................
..................TEXT_PRODUCT_MANUFACTURER . '</span>' . '<span itemprop="brand">' .$manufacturers_name . '</span></li>' : '') . "\n"; ?>

<?php if ($products_quantity > 0) { ?><li><span itemprop="availability" content="in_stock">In Stock</span></li><?php }?><?php if ($products_quantity == 0) { ?><li><span itemprop="availability" content="out_of_stock">Out of Stock</span></li><?php }?> </ul>

Change #8
Her Instructions..
Using the Condition property

We will fake this for a vanilla Zen Cart as well by adding another line just above the closing </ul> as in the previous instruction. Values which can be used are (new, used and refurbished)

<li><span itemprop="condition" content="new">New</span></li>

So change #7 now looks like this...

<?php if ($products_quantity > 0) { ?><li><span itemprop="availability" content="in_stock">In Stock</span></li><?php }?><?php if ($products_quantity == 0) { ?><li><span itemprop="availability" content="out_of_stock">Out of Stock</span></li><?php }?> <li><span itemprop="condition" content="new">New</span></li> </ul>

Change #9
Lastly to make this markup most flexible for search engines and other platforms to understand locate the opening div for your product content in tpl_product_info_display.php
Using Rich Snippets to identify the category
the section marked details, find

</ul> <br /> <?php } ?> <!--eof Product details list -->

Just before this line add

<li>Category: <?php echo '<span itemprop="category" content="' . $categories->fields['categories_name'] . '">' . $categories->fields['categories_name'] ; ?></li>

Mine looked different, so I changed this.....

</ul> <br class="clearBoth" /> <?php } ?> <!--eof Product details list -->

To this....
<br class="clearBoth" />

<?php } ?> <li>Category: <?php echo '<span itemprop="category" content="' . $categories->fields['categories_name'] . '">' . $categories->fields['categories_name'] ; ?></li> <!--eof Product details list -->

Change #10
Her Instructions..
Find

<div id="productGeneral">

and add this to it
itemscope itemtype="http://data-vocabulary.org/Product"

So it looks like this

<div id="productGeneral" itemscope itemtype="http://data-vocabulary.org/Product">

This is all I could find with id="productGeneral", It was on line 16 in my css.. so I changed this

<div class="centerColumn" id="productGeneral">

To this...

<div class="centerColumn" id="productGeneral" itemscope itemtype="http://data-vocabulary.org/Product">

All other changes that I made were exact matches to her 'original' code, and so I am not worried about them. Thanks!!

Re: Implementing Google Rich Snippets.

You're making some fundamental errors here...

For example...

*Mine looked different, so I changed this.....

</ul> <br class="clearBoth" /> <?php } ?> <!--eof Product details list -->

To this....
<br class="clearBoth" />

<?php } ?> <li>Category: <?php echo '<span itemprop="category" content="' . $categories->fields['categories_name'] . '">' . $categories->fields['categories_name'] ; ?></li> <!--eof Product details list -->*

You cannot have <li> components OUTSIDE the <ul> tags...

Be careful with this stuff... If you are unsure of HTML structural rules you could damage your site badly.

Rather let someone tackle it who knows how to handle variances in your files' code structures.

Re: Implementing Google Rich Snippets.

Thanks, I will move that component before the closing <ul> tag. I have made thorough backups of entire site in more than one location as a precaution. If anyone has time to look for more errors I would appreciate it. I would rather learn how to do this stuff than not. These edits are all on one page so I am going to tackle it myself if possible. As a last resort I will hire someone to do it for me. Thanks!!!!

I believe that I have fixed change #9, but Google structured Data Testing tool still showing 'no date' on my site. Does anyone see any other errors that may be causing this.... as far as what schoolboy told me, I changed to this.. Thanks!!!!! :smile:

"availability" content="out_of_stock">Out of Stock</span></li><?php }?>

<li><span itemprop="condition" content="new">New</span></li> <li>Category: <?php echo '<span itemprop="category" content="' . $categories->fields['categories_name'] . '">' . $categories->fields['categories_name'] ; ?></li> </ul> <br class="clearBoth" /> <?php } ?> <!--eof Product details list -->

Re: Implementing Google Rich Snippets.

@Design75 .. Thanks, but that's where I got this from. My code is slightly different from her examples because I have a different template, and so I don't know exactly how to place some of her code into my already changed code.., plus I don't even know the basics yet.... which isn't really helping me.. ha

Re: Implementing Google Rich Snippets.

For the most-part, it seems like your template is adding just one span identifier...

<span class="product-info-label">

which it then uses to STYLE the element in the span.'

The way you have added the snippets to accommodate this additional <span> seems fine to me... I cannot see any major conflicts.

What you need to do, of course, is go through everything very slowly and carefully again. When I did my additions the first time, I had a rogue comma in the code and all I got was a blank screen. I no longer panic when such things happen, because experience has taught me where to look for mistakes, but adding all this stuff is not that simple, so go through everything again and check it.

It helps if you use a proper PHP editor, because this will apply colours to the code elements and will also indicate errors and omissions.

I used to use a PHP editor, but now just use crimson editor.
