Multiple product shipping discount on specific categories

I have my shipping set up to work on a perunitweight basis, which is working excellent but now I have realized that there are specific products for which I would prefer to have a shipping discount when the customer purchases more than one going to the same address. I would like to know if anybody knows how I can make it work like that and it would only be specifically for a couple of my categories not all.

Can you give a slow example of this to give a better idea of what you mean on the discount for more than 1 and is this on all products or some products and how to distinguish which Products need this?

This is the situation. When a customer orders a gown I have the shipping set up to cover the actual shipping based on weight, when that same customer orders a second, third and forth gown I need the shipping to be reduced to an amount thats about 60% less than the first item. I want this to only work on the gowns that I have in three categories.

Example

Brides Gown shipping is $48
plus 1 bridesmaid gown add only $20 for shipping
plus a flower girl gown add only $20 for shipping.

Currently every gown is being charged the same amount ($48) for shipping. I have other categories for which I don't need the above type of shipping as I have it set up to work on a perunitweight basis.

Currently, the the Per Unit perweightunit shipping module is just taking the total weight and using it as dollars ...

To turn around and calculate the discount would require some custom coding ...

You could calculate how much of the weight/dollars are from those categories and calculate how many items are in there and change work out a discocunt between them ... but it is definitely a customized job for this ...

Is it possible to have a flat rate shipping amount such as $20 added for each additional gown once a customer puts more than one gown in to the cart?
Is there an add-on that possible can manage this sort of thing. It doesn't need to be a percentage, a flat rate of $20 for each additional gown would work.

That is the customization part ...

You need to customize the shipping module to count how many items are in the cart from the 3 categories ...

You could set them to 0 weight on the Products and then you are just dealing with the counts where 1 is $48 and all others are $20 and add that to the cost in the Per Unit shipping module that would then manage the calculations on the rest of the order ...

Do you use Free Shipping on anything?

Sorry for the delay, crazy busy here with moving. So your idea sounds good but can I have a per unitshipping mod on 3 of my categories and leave the perweightunit mod on my other categories?

I did find the Quantity Discounts mod in the add-ons area and i could probably make it work for my purpose but I think that it is important that the customer see the price difference reflect in the shipping costs rather than in the product if you know what I mean.

I looked through the forum and it seems that there have been many others looking for the same sort of solution for the same purpose. I wonder if anybody has found a way to work it out.

You lost me on that one ... the Per Unit is the perweightunit shipping module ...

What shipping module(s) are you using right now?

When you say use the unitshipping module for 3 categories and the perweightunit for the other categories ... what is the unitshipping mode?

What is it that you want this unitshipping module to do?

Is the unitshipping module the Item Rate item or something else?

Sorry Linda, I thought that you were saying that there was a perunit mod as well as the perweightunit that I already have installed. Okay, I'll try to explain my intent a bit better here....

I have say 10 categories and out of those ten there are three that I need to have a shipping discount for purchases of more than one item. They are all garments and I have adjusted the weight of each so that they are all $48.75 for shipping. What I didn't realize was that if a customer orders more than one then the shipping ends up being way more than it needs to be. So if a customer orders a gown and then orders a few more for her bridal party then the shipping ends up being so much that it may make the buyer look else where.
The other categories that I have set up need to be on a perweightunit basis because it is by weight that I will be charged the shipping from the supplier.

Any ideas of how I can make it work without having hire somebody to fix it?

Let's say they are all in categories_id 10 and use the master_categories_id 10 ...

You could calculate a discount on these in the perweightunit.php

You can adjust how the discount is made etc.

You can add in more categories to check or combine the count from more categories before doing the discount or what ever you like ...

Canbride, I was wondering if the calculate in post #10 above worked for you? I'm trying to configure shipping for a site that has something very similar to what you are trying to accomplish. Trying now to get my hands around it diving in. Basically, they have a set shipping rate based on product type, then for each additional of the same product type, there is a smaller charge. Then they have a different charges for International vs. Domestic. Which I think I have a good handle on how to handle the zones.

I'll will post a new thread specific to my situation with more details, but want to plan out as much possible before posting it.
