Wich SQL to choose? upgr 138 to 139 or only sgl??

While I am just to import the 1.3.9c to my server, in a demo folder I have named differently, I notice that in the SQL folder there are two (2) different SQL:s. I am wondering over which one to choose.

They read like this, in the folder called "zc_install / sql/ ":

mysql_upgrade_zencart_138_to_139.sql

and

mysql_zencart.sql

Ps. I currently use version 1.3.8 for my webshop.

Thanks in advance

Re: Wich SQL to choose? upgr 138 to 139 or only sgl??

You should upload both files (actually the entire zc_install folder) to the server. But you should NOT execute them manually. You need to let zc_install process them as part of the database_upgrade menu choice.

Whatever you do, DON'T run the mysql_zencart.sql file directly. It will wipe out your existing database.

**** EDIT: Don't run SQL files manually at all. ****

Re: Wich SQL to choose? upgr 138 to 139 or only sgl??

Thank you both,

My webhost server ask via PhpMyAdmin to choose "a" sql file, do you still mean I should select the folder? WIll Phpmyadmin actually admit a folder with sql files instead of a certain sql file?

Is there any 1,2,3 kids proof tutorial on this one?

When I upload to my demo folder I dont have 1.3.8 preinstalled as it is a "clean" databas, should I simply upload the 1.39c and play with it? See that it works?

When it works I still have the database WITH the 1.3.8 version. How will I go about really? I dont seem to understand entirely the procedure in the tutorials.

Thanks again and in advance

You should NOT be using phpMyAdmin to run ANY of the .sql files in zc_install.
Instead you should run zc_install/index.php in your browser, and choose the database-upgrade option.

Hi again,

Ok, but how do I run zc_install via my browser?

I mean my web host "tutorial" says I should upload the sql via phpmyadmin and choose sql. Now you say I shouldnt. I feel I am missing out on something that is very important and at the same time elementary. But so easy I dont get it :-)

What I feel I miss out on is to understand what I am missing. Allthough the dedicated posted tutorial threads explaining how to do this whole procedure is great in one way, they miss out to give me that little "key"-thing. Do you know of any thread that shows every step I need to do, and I mean every step, almost like if I was a kid.

I hear you and kind of understand what you mean and really appreciate that take time to help out, really do. I only feel that I need all these suggestions to fall into place.

Add /zc_install to the end of the link to your demo folder and zc_install should start on its own.

stefanl, detailed upgrade instructions that help you retain your customizations while upgrading to new features, can be found in the installation zip file under the /docs/2.Readme-Upgrade.html file.

The 'key-thing' is to follow these instructions to a tee

Re: Wich SQL to choose? upgr 138 to 139 or only sgl??

Apparently there's clarification needed on a few things:

  1. If you're making backups of your existing database, or importing a copy of your database data into a new database for testing, then you DO need to use phpMyAdmin as explained in the tutorial. That's JUST to make a copy of your database so you can do upgrade testing on it.

  2. But you started out by asking which .sql files from zc_install you need to upload and use in phpMyAdmin. THAT's what I was telling you was dangerous talk.
AFTER you've imported a copy of your data into the new testing database via phpMyAdmin, you can CLOSE phpMyAdmin.
If you've been following the tutorial properly, then you'll already have ALL the zc_install files on your server.
Then in your browser start zc_install/index.php (yes, that means www.your_site.com/your_testing_store_folder/zc_install/index.php ), and choose the database_upgrade option, just as the tutorial says.

Re: Wich SQL to choose? upgr 138 to 139 or only sgl??

Hi DrByte,

I was asking initially as you mentioned, and kindof still is, but you brought to my attention which I am glad of, the problems that can occur.

1 - I already have a shop up and running, version 138
2 - I like to upgrade from 138 to 139c
3 - I like to testrun 139 in a separate newly created databas for this very testrun,
4 - I like to copy and paste all my files from 138 to 139 so I can see that it all works fine
5 - When I have testrunned 139c, I like to upgrade my webshop now on 138 to make it a 139c version.

I see my own limitation in properly understanding for the moment on what info I am missing.

6 - After installing (importing) the database via phpmyadmin I tried and tried to go onine to see how it looked like in my browser, and to log in to my admin, but it simply didnt show up.

Thanks
Stefan

Hi again DrByte

How do I start zc_install /index.php in my browser?

And when my phpmyadmin ask for sql file, do I choose A "folder" called zc_install or do I choose A sql file in the zc_install folder.

I may sound as if banging my head into a wall here, but I really missunderstand something I completly admit it. In this very last thing I am like a kid. I am not that good at using zencart but I am slowly learning bit by bit

Re: Wich SQL to choose? upgr 138 to 139 or only sgl??

In phpMyAdmin it's asking you for a file for saving your database backup / dump / export.
And it's that same file that you'll select when restoring/importing that data back into your new testing database after installing a clean new database and running zc_install for the FIRST time.
You're NOT ever pointing phpMyAdmin to the zc_install folder for any reason.

My webhost phpmyadmin is asking in the "import" tab to import the sql file. I found 25 sql files in the zc_install folder.

Do you know the name of wich exact file in wich exact folder I am to import?

I have already made a backup of my shop previously. And that seem to work okey,

Really a BIG thanks for helping out

THAT (your backup) is when you'll import.

But ONLY after you've first done a NEW install of the NEW Zen Cart in a NEW folder and a NEW database. And that requires using zc_install.

DO NOT IMPORT USING phpMyAdmin UNTIL AFTER YOU'VE INSTALLED A NEW SITE USING ZC_INSTALL.

If none of them, what am I importing?
My webhost explicitly says that to import my database I do so via phpmyadmin / import / click the "File to import" button / choose the sql file

If you know says I shouldnt import any of these, then which one am I to choose?

How do I get the database to imported?

Please Dr Byt, if there is anything you see as obvious knowledge, I ensure you it isnt obvious to me :-)

Re: Wich SQL to choose? upgr 138 to 139 or only sgl??

Stef, you said you made a backup of your site, right? Well, if you made a FULL backup, and used gzip, then your backup should look something like this:

backup-5.27.2010_22-46-19_getemfas.tar.gz (That's one of my old backups)

When......and ONLY when DrByte and the turorial tells you to import your database to your NEW site, you will open up this zipped folder. In there you will find a file called "mysql.sql". THAT'S the sql file that you want to import. **But, read further before proceeding!
**
Almost all hosts limit the amount of MiB that you can upload, and usually that's not NEAR enough for a whole Zen-Cart database. So your better off to create a backup of your database, by it self, to import to your new site (see below).

If you ONLY created an sql backup, it should look something like this:
zc1.sql.gz ** (zc1 is the name of my database....yours will start with the name of your database.)
Then you would import that into your database, as is....
.do NOT unzip**. phpMyAdmin will do that on it's own.

Hope that helps clear up the "mysterious" sql file problem for you.

Guys, I realle appreciate your help.

I downloaded the 139c to my computer. Do you mean I should NOT install/import 139c to my temporary test site?
