Verifying site for google

Hello,

I`m try to get listed by google and in order to do that i have to verify my site for google and this message pops up.......Copy the meta tag listed below and paste it into your site's home page. The code should be in <head> beginning, before the first <body> box.

Can anyone please guide me as to how to get this done?

Kind regards.

Re: Verifying site for google

It's easier to use their "HTML Page" option.

In notepad, create a simple html file

<html>
<body> google83723278878nde898.html
</body>
<html>

Where google83723278878nde898.html is the code they give you.

Save it as google83723278878nde898.html

FTP the file to the ROOT of your hosting account (typically inside a folder called public_html)

Hit the "Verify" link in your google account.

Re: Verifying site for google

It's not a file, it's a folder.

You find it by using FTP to access your site.

What is meant by "public_html" is the root folder of your site as seen from the web.

It is often called "public_html" or "www" or similar, but might be called something else.

Re: Verifying site for google

I found a way to do this via metacode on the forum but it does not work. Is this code correct or do i need to delete something?

?>

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" <?php echo HTML_PARAMS; ?>> <head>

<meta name="google-site-verification" content="x71UoTp-5OftOTum3TTgcvWectOvdhOd3Nom8ZHyqNo"

<title><?php echo META_TAG_TITLE; ?></title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=<?php echo CHARSET; ?>" /> <meta name="keywords" content="<?php echo META_TAG_KEYWORDS; ?>" /> <meta name="description" content="<?php echo META_TAG_DESCRIPTION; ?>" /> <meta http-equiv="imagetoolbar" content="no" /> <meta name="author" content="The Zen Cart™ Team and others" /> <meta name="generator" content="shopping cart program by Zen Cart™, <http://www.zen-cart.com> eCommerce" />

Re: Verifying site for google

The HTML page option suggested by schoolboy is much easier. It really doesn't even have to contain any html; it just needs to exist in your cart's top level directory (the one that has the directory "includes" "images" and "email" in it.)

Re: Verifying site for google

If you examine the opening < and closing /> tags above, you'll see there is a closing /> missing from the verification line and there is an extra stray one three lines further down.

However, as previously stated, it is much better to add separate Google, Yahoo, and Bing verification files to the site root rather than add loads more data to the <head> section of your page.

Re: Verifying site for google

It goes in the site root, not in the shop folder.

Re: Verifying site for google

We have to assume that people using this forum have at least a basic (and I mean basic) understanding of how their hosting works, and what it means to add a html file to a folder.

This is such basic stuff... and actually, verifying sites with google has NOTHING to do with zencart, so any advice given here is done out of goodwill.

There are MANY areas on the www where budding "webmasters" can learn the ropes, and it is assumed that people wanting to manage their sites will go out there and find them.

Re: Verifying site for google

As originally posted by DrByte (although I can't find this post directly):

  1. Create a new file named jscript_googleverify.php
  2. Put this into it ... just the code you need for Google (likely just the ONE line) ... (do NOT use any <?php or ?> tags in this file):
    Code:
    <meta name="verify-v1" content="blahblahblah"/>3. Upload this new file into your custom template folder's jscript folder, like so:
    /includes/template/YOURTEMPLATE/jscript/jscript_googleverify.php

This will cause that file's contents to be displayed inside the <head> tag of your site ... and you won't have to touch the default html_header.php file, making upgrades simpler !

Re: Verifying site for google

I am trying to verify my site for google and am using the html file upload. I have tried putting it in just about every folder I can think of and it cannot be found. When I access my site I type https://www.impelsawholesalers.com and it redirects to https://www.impelsawholesalers.com/cart. When trying to verify and I type https://www.impelsawholesalers.com/cart/googlexxxxxxxxx.html the file shows up in the browser. But google only wants to use mydomain.com/googlexxxxxxxx.html and when I do that I get a blank page in the browser. Where do I put this file?
