Session Error after upgrading to PHP 5.2.13

Hi guys, we last night upgraded to PHP 5.2.13 from PHP 4, all tests seemed good until we encountered peak times on the server when this happened the following within the MySQL session database spiked and killed the server.
the heavy processes were calling this type of query:

delete from sessions where expiry < 1276085671

zen-cart version 1.3.8a

any ideas?
