Upgrading from 1.3.5

Hi,
I need to upgrade a shop from 1.3.5 to the latest version, but the existing shop has a lot of data some of which is no longer required.
Would my best approach be to build a new shop with the latest version and then transfer any data required from the old shop database? This would be mainly customers details.
The shop is busy so by creating a new one it will cause the least amount of disruption.
