getting my head around uk postage?!

i have read through almost every post i can find regarding postage within the uk but i still cannot get my head around it and i wonder if someone can please help me out.

i am a uk based company shipping gift boxes and small token gifts to the uk only at the moment, my shop accepts paypal and no other payment method, because of this i have installed the uk counties by coffe granules sql patch, zones are installed fine and i have set up a zone definition called uk freeship, which i have changed the settings to include on the freeshipping module with no problems (i am using royal mail by the way) i need to offer free shipping over £45 (which pretty much applies to most of my gift boxes) and by weight postage for the cheaper, smaller token gifts

my concerns are that for some uk "zones" other than UK mainland (UK Highlands, Northern Ireland, UK Islands and Channel Islands) the shipping may be higher so i need to anticipate these costs as my "freeshipping" may end up costing me the earth instead, i also have this concern for pricing per weight for shipping but again i am concerned with these zones.do these apply to me? does this also apply to royal mail first class/second class or is it courier servies that abide to these and if it does apply where can i find pricing for this? i have searched absolutely everywhere and i really cannot fathom this out!

sorry for the long winded message but i hope i have provided enough information for some advice :)

thanks to all x

Re: getting my head around uk postage?!

I'm currently looking into this myself, as I had until now allowed NI customer to order at the same cost as others, but have since learned this has cost me more in shipping (I use a drop shipper, so didn't handle this myself or notice the higher invoices for these few purchase).

My understanding is all services (including first and second class) are more expensive to NI and Channel Islands, but not sure about others, and that is just my understanding.

don't know if it's worth contacting RM?
