Customer specific downloads

Hey ho, I'm planning on selling downloadable products on my site. I've got all the downloads working splendidly. But I want to offer customisation of the files too. How can I have a custom download file that is specific to one customer, one they can access from their account area as a normal download.

I was going to set it as a hidden product and edit the order once I had completed the customisation. But I don't know how to hide the products.

Any ideas would be ace.

Would you be doing the customisation by hand or automatically?

I would actually need to generate the download file after purchase, but this seems not to be supported at the moment. It is only possible to have one, fixed filename for each downloadable product.

I was thinking thinking to make a customization. I though generating the file at notification NOTIFY_CHECKOUT_PROCESS_AFTER_ORDER_CREATE_ADD_PRODUCTS and modifying the filename to contain order_products_id to make it unique (a mod to downloads manager). Am I on the right track here?

And of course, there must be someone who has already done this, so a contribution would be much appreciated.
