Stop sub categories appearing in LH column

Have tried all settings I can think of although I am sure I have done this before....! Just want the top level categories to display in LH column as the sub categories are displayed on the main page when top level category is clicked.

Admin > Configuration > Layout Settings > Categories - Always Open to Show SubCategories.

Yes that's where I thought it was - but it's set to 0 and they still appear?

May be something about your template - have you switched temporarily to the Classic template ?

I did switch to classic green template and lo and behold the sub categories did not display on the LH box....now...how do I go about correcting this on the template in use??!!

No way to tell without seeing your site... and even then we couldn't see the PHP code in your template files that is causing your issue. But seeing your site live would be a start.
What mods do you have installed besides the template?

Ah - your pointer put me in the right area. I had previously changed the includes/mytemplate/sideboxes/tpl_categories.php to suppress one category (SALE) and so I checked the original coding and saw a statement had been erased.

SO for anyone else....this only displays top level categories but suppress one with no name!
