Extreme sluggishness in shopping cart

I just updated someone to 1.3.9D - she has always had extreme slowness in her cart.....here is the parse time info after getting to the shipping page.....this is with 5 products added to the shopping cart

Parse Time: 9.917 - Number of Queries: 7491 - Query Time: 9.5814548197479

She does have a lot of attributes for each product......and she hosts on dreamhost....

I have advised her that her images are HUGE and need to be resized but that has nothing to do with parse time in the cart correct?

Is there anything I can do to help her increase the speed....the Firebug speed test came back good....so I am not sure what can be causing the problem...

I already told her moving hosts would be a benefit - but just want to be clear there is nothing cart wise I can do to help...

Could be a routing thing, or hosting. I got:

Parse Time: 0.593 - Number of Queries: 82 - Query Time: 0.24997630966187

for the main page.

Clicking on the first category, though:

Parse Time: 5.190 - Number of Queries: 226 - Query Time: 4.8445042563477

Well the category/product pages I am assuming are because her images are huge....another designer did this site and I do not think she was educated about image size - so she knows she needs to go back and redo them all - it is the cart that is the bigger issue since the images should not affect the cart....

Go ahead and add products to the cart and watch how slow it is....

No can do. My create account approval is 'pending'.

Just for the record, you might let her know that, save autoload music or other noise, nothing makes me leave a site faster than Login for Price, and under no circumstance would I wait to be approved, and then come back and shop.

(Unless you set it up that way just for testing, in which case, please ignore the above rant.)

Not good, but not terrible either - I would suspect hosting.

Other pages are fine (FAQ, etc.) except Contact Us doesn't work.

weird....I was getting parse times of like 9.5 and queries counts in the thousands...I had like 5 different bracelets in the cart - each one has like 5 or 6 options....can you try that and see what you get?

I am suspecting hosting too - but I do not think she is convinced....I have read some not good things about the host - but have no personal experience with them....

With 6 products in the cart (including 5 charms and bracelets with all those attributes) - Checkout:

Parse Time: 10.835 - Number of Queries: 6682 - Query Time: 10.25798944809

I'm no expert, but I think it's the attributes responsible for all those queries, but I'm still leaning toward hosting.

As it is now, the slow page load for the shopping cart and checkout wouldn't keep me from buying, especially as a wholesale customer.

Thanks Steve.....I think the attributes have a large part to it too - but would imagine a better host would help...

My client is stressing because her main wholesale client is angry because of the delay - she actually sent me an email he sent to her this morning....

I just re-emailed her that all I can suggest is to change hosting....I think I have done everything I can do!

If the problem is appearing on the shipping page then it could be that there are a lot of shipping modules installed. Or one of the shipping modules is doing a lot of database lookups.

Thanks Christian...it is actually all the pages in the checkout area.....debating whether to have her just move hosts - but hate to do that just to find out it is something with the cart.....uugghh

Over 7000 queries is a lot, especially as the rest of the store is running with far less. At this point I would say that if you move host the problem may well move with you.

Which shipping methods do you have installed? Do you have any installed but not enabled?
