Age Verification / COPPA

Sooner or later all my happy Zen Cart store owners ask me the same question:

"Can we eliminate the Verify your Age field in the account setup?"

My understanding is this make the signup COPPA compliant, but in what way? To be compliant, we should not collect personal information for minors under the age of (some say 13, some say 14), but the form accepts and verifys the account regardless of age. Iff'n we don't verify the account we still have the information.

Need some enlightenment. :smile:

I don't know about COPPA (which is really moot, since there's no way to know if the minor is lying about her age), but you can turn tat field off in Admin - Configuration - Customer Details.

Agreed. I lie about my age all the time.

Should I advise my customers to leave that there? Or just go ahead and shut it off for them?

I turn it off first thing on every site I build. The only times I've turned it back on is when the owner wants to track customers' birthdays to send greetings (an annoyance to me, as a customer).
