Disable Ground when offering Free Shipping and alternative shipping options

Let see...I'm offering Free Shipping to the 48 contiguous states and want to offer expedited services to them aswell. The free shipping is working nicely but I'm concerned with the additional servcies.

I'm seeing both Expedited and Ground services from FedEx, since both modules are installed. Is it possible to remove the "Ground" services ONLY when a customer qualifies for the free shipping?

I can't disable Ground options overall within the FedEx module as it will disable them for everyone else, such as HI and AK customers.

Any suggestions as to what I can do here? or maybe someone has already figured this out?

I plan on adding USPS as an option down the road.

If you were to have your Free Shipping Options freeoptions with a Sort Order of 10, and all other shipping modules with higher Sort Order such as 20, 30, etc. etc.

Then you could set a global variable, such as $free_shipping_options_on as an example, for when the Free Shipping Options freeoptions is actually enabled and triggered based on the conditions ...

Then, that variable $free_shipping_options_on can be checked for in other shipping modules, such as FedEx or UPS or USPS, in the function quote and used to enable or disable specific shipping methods as needed ...
