Category side box

I was woundering if anyone knew of a way to limit the category side box to just the top level category.

Basicly if I have 4 top level categories

Cat 1
Cat 2
Cat 3 ect... and then the categories go deeper from these categories, is their a way that when a visitor click on say cat one it just loads up the category page, but doesn't break the side box down any further?

Does that make sense to anyone?

this solution would not be dynamic, but you could install the editable side box and just put the category links in there AFTER you create all of your categories.

but then you would need to remember to add a new category link every time you add a category.

or you could edit this and try to work with this one
