How do I know what the "new" version files are?

How do I find out what the new version files are??

Is this a process where I need to sit there and compare files, or how does this work?

I am upgrading from 1.3.8a to .9f the latest version..

If you have used the template override system there should be only a handfull of files that might require comparing/merging
Check the changelogs in the distribution /docs folder against your list of overridden files

Going from a to f though you can just review the changes in b, c, d, e and f - they are in the docs folder - what's new in <version>. You don't have to compare every file and figure it out yourself.

If you're going from v1.3.8a to v1.3.9f, then yes, you should be comparing everything, following the instructions included in the /docs/ folder of every Zen Cart release zip.

a) compare all your CURRENT files against CLEAN files for THAT version. Note your customizations.
b) reproduce those customizations into the NEW version's files
c) test them all on a new test copy of your site+database
d) when all testing is ready, move the files to your live site and upgrade the database.

Of course, test again on the live site for peace of mind.

And always make backups of files and database before doing anything.

The published upgrade docs go into more detail.

hmm, I am still thinking about how I want to go about this.. I cannot remember how long it took me to stylize my store.

Well I am going to put some thought into this and make a decision from there. Thanks for all the responses, I will post if I have and questions.

Backup - Backup - Backup
Before doing anything - -both filkes and DB

I do a diff -rbq between the two releases
then for each file that's modified do a diff -b between the old version and my core files

then I merge these modifications into the new file.

Then I use a cpdir shell script I stole somewhere to copy the file with preserved directory structure.

I've gotten the patching process down to an hour or so.. if I knew a little more *nix scripting I'd automate most all of it.

So I decided to just do it the way that was said the first time. To go through all the updates and pick out the new files and upload them and so on..

The problem I am having is creating my new store in a new directory. I got all the new information and database setup. I told zen-cart to use my custom template but most of my homepage is missing. All I see is this:

What did I do wrong?

All I see is this:
"HEADER_TITLE_CATALOG
When you see a constant - you most likely omitted the pair of single quote around your desired text

My rollover buttons do not work now because I updated them to the new text. The reason is the onload statement in the <body> tag in the html.

What file is that in?

When you compare your old custom 1.3.8 template folder against the 1.3.8 template_default folder, what differences do you note?
Have you recreated those same customizations into all the equivalent files in your new custom template?

That comparison process is the fastest way to finding the old changes that might be missing in your new setup.

All I am doing right now is getting the template updated with the new navbar images. And I went through all my custom template files and didnt see one with the opening body tag. Which leads me to believe I must have accidentally saved the default one with my onload statement in it.

Can you tell me which file it so I can remove it and add that file to my custom template folder and then update the statement?

.3.8b, .8c, .... so on.
This site only has the .8a and then goes to .9a, b, c, ... and so on. Is this correct, just download everything for .9?

What version do you have now?

Didn't you upgrade from 1.3.8a to 1.3.9f directly?

Just to point out an error in your live site, the videos link contains a zenid, which may cause cart issues for some customers, you need to remove that

I currently have 1.3.8a, So you are saying I can just download and install 1.3.9f and run upgrade?

I was getting the impression that I had to run all the updates from 1.3.9a to 1.3.9f because I have such an old version...

As for the zenid thing... What the heck is that?! I am not sure if the videos are going to be sold any longer but please fill me in on what that is..

AS i understand the zenid identifies your session or cart (there was a good explanation of this somewhere, but can't find the blasted thing)

so if multiple people have the same id its not good

you just need to remove the "&zenid=ee4c48940cc3197457d937aa3a5989d9"

also, when you get your site updated, add image handler, because your site is phenomenally slow for me about 30 second to load the main page, and it can all be trace back to the images which way in at about a megabyte all up, optimising them will make your site load in about 5 or 6 seconds

Sorry i can't help with your upgrade, I recently upgraded from 1.3.7 to 1.3.9b, I did a complete new install and then imported the database, the actual upgrade itself was easy, it was just getting my customisations back on the store that took a little time
