Page is Blank After Install

Hi, i just installed v1.3.8a and when I go to my home page it comes up completely white. I installed using this tutorial except I didn't create the shop directory, I uploaded all the files directly to the html file so my root domain would be my homepage. I also noticed that there is no .htaccess file.

Zen Cart v1.3.8a is VERY old, and contains some bad security flaws. v1.3.9f is the current version. There's no reason to install the old version when the new one is available.
Zen Cart doesn't supply a .htaccess file for the main folder of the store, since it doesn't require one for normal operation. If you need/want one for your own reasons, feel free to make one.
