need some advice

I need some advice. There are 2 layers to this post.

I messed up some files in Admin and now cannot get to my admin site to make changes to my cart. The error is "Warning: require(includes/application_top.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/cakeg0/public_html/admin/login.php on line 23"

My zencart is running v1.3.8a and I have been putting off upgrading to v1.3.9x. My host runs Fastastico in Control Panel which offers "upgrade to v.1.3.9d" by clicking a button. My question is if I upgrade this way, will I further mess up my cart? I take consolation as at least orders are coming in. I'm hoping upgrading will fix the error so I can access the store's back to address housekeeping issues.

Many thanks for your good advice.

Re: need some advice

Upgrading using an auto-upgrade tool like Fantastico's is not advisable. It may upgrade a default, unmodified site fairly well, but if your site has add-ons installed, template changes, and so on -- in other words, if your site is finished and working -- the auto-upgrader will mess things up. You have to do the upgrade manually, or pay someone else to do it.

Others will advise about your first problem. They'll want details about how you "messed up some files in Admin".

Re: need some advice

Thanks Rob for the good advice. I have resisted using Fantastico as I am to go on a trip, incidentally to Vancouver, BC. If I break it some more my vacation will be shot.

What I did was removing shipping modules that I don't use like "UPS", "USPS" etc. from the admin folder, by deleting the php files from the server after copying them to my local drive. In hindsight I should have uninstalled within the Admin site. Even after I moved back the files, I could not get into Admin.

Any pointers will be very much appreciated.

With best regards,

That message is telling you that your /admin/includes/application_top.php file doesn't exist.
Perhaps it's wise to put back a good one from the last backup you made of your site?

Thanks DrByte,

I'm comparing the location of 'application_top.php' in a v1.3.8a file directory I downloaded with what I have on the server. This said file is located at path "public_html/admin/admin". If I click on "includes" it is not there.

I do not a backup but have to rebuild this once I can get into the Admin site.

Pls help!

Re: need some advice

Thanks to all for your advice. Some of the files were in the wrong folders. After comparing the contents of the file contents in the directories and moving them around, now it is accessible!

Now where's that beer?
