error 404 on products (URL rewriting bad)

I have been trying to find the error for 16 hours now and am asking for help now. I installed a new zen cart (have done this before) on a new domain. I did no thave any installation errors and the database hook up works. I've checked both configure files several times.

The home page displays just fine and I am able to add categories and products without a problem. When I click on a product I get an error 404, page not found. Some of the links in the sideboxes work and find the pages, some don't. I have added a new template, but I get the same error on the classic template as well. I am about out of hair to pull out...

The cart is one extra level down in the directory, but the paths are specified in the config files. The domain I am using is a second domain on my site, but since the home page works it does not seem to be the problem.

Should I start over and reinstall everything? Does anyone know why the path can not be found? This is an example path that does not work:

Every link on your main page takes me to a 404 page. Do you have any sort of redirect going on ?

Since you don't have much added yet, I'd be tempted to re-install, this time in the root of your site if possible.

no redirects - will reinstall. I could have done that in less time than trying to figure this out!

Delete all your RewriteRules from your .htaccess, and turn OFF your so-called SEO URL module, whichever it is you're using. THAT is what's causing your problems, because all your pages are getting redirected by those rules, and pointed to pages that do NOT exist in your store.
Most of those modules ONLY cause trouble. I don't recommend using them normally.

Search engines can index Zen Cart URLs just fine, without needing to make them search-engine "friendly".

I'm trying to reinstall a new fresh cart, but will upload my last version and look again at the .htaccess file(s).

Now the physical path of the files in the system setup part of the install gives me an error no matter what path is in there, and the cart will not install. I donwloaded the latest and greatest version of Zen Cart so I don't know if it is a 9f thing ? or if I have gremlins...

I've installed quite a few carts and this has never happened before!
