Can not install Zen Cart...

Trying to install "zen-cart-v1.3.9f-full-fileset-08142010" on my test Ubuntu server 10.04. I've spent whole day for finding out an error, but still unsuccessful. I think I did everything according the instructions, but getting following info on screen:

*Hello. Thank you for loading Zen Cart™.
You are seeing this page for one or more reasons:

  1. This is your first time using Zen Cart™ and you haven't yet completed the normal Installation procedure.
If this is the case for you, Click here to begin installation.

  2. Your /includes/configure.php and/or /admin/includes/configure.php file contains invalid path information and/or invalid database-connection information.
If you recently edited your configure.php files for any reason, or maybe moved your site to a different folder or different server, then you'll need to review and update all your settings to the correct values for your server.
See the Online FAQ and Tutorials area on the Zen Cart™ website for assistance.

  3. Additional Details: includes/configure.php not found*

Do I need edit both configuration.php files manually? I could not get any settings dialog by clicking on links. Any ideas?

You shouldn't have to, nor should you, edit the configuration.php files (the file needed is actually configure.php). Are you sure that you're visiting the right page?

If the file doesn't exist, the installer can't update it, and the storefront can't use it.

Re: Can not install Zen Cart...

In reality file includes/configure.php and the admin/includes/configure.php also does exist.
First time I tried to install ZenCart without modifying any of files - unsuccessful...
Then I read instructions and renamed both dist-configure.php files to configure.php with deleting all the files from var/www directory and copying them again from source - unsuccessful...
Tried to modify configure.php files by writing in mysql password, fixing the links - unsuccessful also...
What else I need to try???

Re: Can not install Zen Cart...

Assuming you've got configure.php files in the appropriate locations, if you go to zc_install/index.php with your browser, the installation process should begin.

Re: Can not install Zen Cart...

That screenshot tells me that you've copied the /includes/ content into /zc_install/ instead of the proper contents for /zc_install/

I've just copied all contents of downloaded content from ZenCart to /var/www/shop/ . then tried to open it with browser and clicked on install link. After no success I read the instructions and renamed dist-configure.php files to configure.php. When this did not give results I tried to explore configure.php files and fix errors mentioned in screenshoot... no result. I did not copy any files from one directory to another!

Re: Can not install Zen Cart...

  1. Delete the entire /shop/ folder from your server.

Then re-install, just like the installation instructions:
2. Re-upload the set of files.
3. Rename both configure.php files and make them writable
4. Point your browser to /shop/zc_install/index.php

4. Point your browser to /shop/zc_install/index.php

I did the following steps:
cd /var/www
sudo rm -R shop
sudo mkdir ZenCart
sudo cp -R [source]/* ZenCart
cd ZenCart
sudo mv includes/dist-configure.php includes/configure.php
sudo mv admin/includes/dist-configure.php admin/includes/configure.php
sudo chmod 777 includes/configure.php
sudo chmod 777 admin/includes/configure.php

Then I pointed my browser to 192.168.1.10/ZenCart//zc_install/index.php and result .... the same!

Do you see any errors in my operations?

Re: Can not install Zen Cart...

According to both of the screenshots you've posted there are two things I note:

  1. The exact problem is being told to you in point #3: /includes/configure.php not found. You should not be ignoring that message.

  2. zc_install doesn't have any facility within it to call the error screen that's being displayed. Thus it's somehow pulling it from the main folder. I'm guessing that this is a symptom of a server which isn't configured to handle relative paths?

How exactly did you install and configure PHP on this server?
How exactly did you install and configure the webserver engine on this server? And what permissions does it use? What user does it run as?

Have you tried using a traditional webserver build by a hosting company who sets up usable webservers on a daily basis? With respect, one very common problem I see with people starting with ecommerce is that they quickly slap together a server thinking everything should just magically work and then we discover after days of painful diagnosis that the problem is their homegrown server, and nothing at all with Zen Cart or the Zen Cart installation instructions.

Finally I found the problem... All times before I used source files downloaded and unziped by my Windows computer. When I tried to unzip zip file by using unzip command in Linux server my installation started right away.
Now I am trying to solve login problem in both admin and customer area. Interesting, that I cannot login from Opera only (security error), but easy can log in from IE8. After some inspection I founded out it is because of different values of variables $_SESSION['securityToken'] and $_POST['securityToken'] . Any ideas?

According to home built server - you are right. I just try to install ZenCart on my home server for learning purposes. I have access to real working ZenCart e-shop admin and just wanted better to play with home server instead of doing something wrong on real server. My home server is Ubuntu 10.04 server edition with LAMP with default settings installed.
