I have looked and looked throughout the forum and am not able to find out how to turn off the welcome emails..... anybody?

People contact me thinking they have been put on our email list.... from my experience it is something that can be done without (at least for me). Could you tell me how to disable?

You could simply change the wording to tell them they're NOT on a mailing list unless they opted into one as part of their signup.
If your site is sending emails as HTML, then simply changing that particular email template's contents to "none" will prevent those messages from being sent.
If you're sending text-only emails then you'll need to hack the option out of the create-account module code.
