uploading to wrong place ?

My disclaimer: I am new to Zen-Cart and hosting.
I have just installed Zen Cart: v1.3.9g I have not upgraded and do not have any addons installed. In fact it is brand new.
following instructions https://www.zen-cart.com/tutorials/index.php?article=142, I downloaded a template and made some changes per instructions and then uploaded.

I am not sure if I uploaded to the right place because when I go to Tools/template Selection > Edit, I only see a classic contemporary green template, not my custom template.

I have installed Zen-Cart on a sub-domain and in a specific folder sub.domain/website-name. I uploaded my custom template folder into that root sub.domain/website-name/custom-template

is this the correct place for it? why do I not see it from Zen admin? I need it to be in a sub-domain for my client to view without interfering with the main domain.

That does not appear to be the correct place.

You need to maintain the structure of Zen Cart files.

You should have something like subdomain.your-site.com/includes

If your template is called CUSTOM then your new file structure should look as follows:

includes
/templates
/CUSTOM
/common
/css
stylesheet.css
/images
/sideboxes
/templates
template_info.php

and similar for the language files

includes
/languages
/CUSTOM

and module files

includes
/modules
/sideboxes
/CUSTOM

I recommend that you read through the tutorials and wiki (links at the top of this page) especially http://www.zen-cart.com/wiki/index.php/Customisation_-_Templates_-_Create
