Couple of Questions

Hello - I have looked around for my questions on the forum and have not found anything as of yet. (maybe I need more coffee :blink: )

I am currently uploading this to my site to play around with it. I am very happy with my current design and really dont want to change it, but I like what I am reading on the functions of the cart.

Is it possible to install the cart on a subdomain name, https://www.shop.mysite.com, and link the products back to the main site? If so, are there any ill effects as to doing it this way? Will customers still be able to continue shopping?

Thanks for any information that might be helpfull.

What is your "main site"?
If a html site/page(s)
The short answer is no

ZenCart is designed to be your shopping portal and for many security reasons a shoppers cart will not remain intact when/if you attempt to use ZenCart as a back end to your "main site"

Most any look can be applied to ZenCart so you can make it match what you currently have as a look BUT then scrap what you have and use ZenCart as your site

Re: Couple of Questions

And if you give us a link to your current site, we can probably offer some advice/tips about how difficult it would be to style Zencart to look the same.

Re: Couple of Questions

Ok - So I have been playing around with this now for a couple of days. I have scoured the forums and the Tutorials/FAQ to answer my questions. I was able to find some, but not all. I find that I was getting frustrated, then again, that is part of installing and editing something new. :huh:

So here are my questions. (If I missed the answers somewhere, I am sorry.)

First - I installed the Bare Bones template and have been editing that. You can find what I have done at http://www.facetsofgem.com/test/

Mind you, I am gonna be playing around with the colors a bit more, just trying to get the layout the way I want it first.

1 - At the top where it says home and log in. I want to keep that there (maybe minus the home) but move it to the right and possibly add other text there and not have it affect the footer.

2 - The picture is set up as the logo - but I am actually thinking of putting a flash or a image rotator there. Is that possible?

3 - Categories - I want to actually have all my categories under the logo (where it says tagline here, as text) with the options of drop downs and not in a side bar.

4 - Sidebars - I really only want customer reviews, new products and most popular. I am sure that it wont show up until i start adding product and stuff. (just kinda thinking out loud on this one)

5 - Information - I want to put those links in the footer.

Thanks in advance for any help. If I did miss something (and I'm sure I did) If you could point me to the answer, I would be greatful.

Why would it affect the footer???

You need to run through creating an account and logging in before settling on relocating/adding to this as there are a few automatic links that appear once logged in and when items are added to cart etc

Home is important to simple navigation

2 - The picture is set up as the logo - but I am actually thinking of putting a flash or a image rotator there. Is that possible?
Yes
Search the forum and the tutorials for flash
3 - Categories - I want to actually have all my categories under the logo (where it says tagline here, as text) with the options of drop downs and not in a side bar.
Turn off side box
admin > tools > layout boxes controller

Turn on cat tabs
admin > config > layout settings > Categories-Tabs Menu ON/OFF

Also search free software addons for menu

4 - Sidebars - I really only want customer reviews, new products and most popular. I am sure that it wont show up until i start adding product and stuff. (just kinda thinking out loud on this one)
admin > tools > layout boxes controller
5 - Information - I want to put those links in the footer.
Load the page and note the address url ending part
i.e. /index.php?main_page=privacy

Create an ezpage as an internal link with that and enabled in the footer

Repeat for others - then turn off side box

Re: Couple of Questions

When I think I am starting to get some where, I run into a brick wall. If this keeps up, I might end up having no hair. :shocking:

Here we go:

Using the barebones template with the css horizontal drop down menu 1.0 and the footer menu 1.0

http://www.facetsofgem.com/test/

1 - I had the horizontal drop down menu all lined up and pretty. I then created an account to see if any or what other options showed up in the header, and now it's all messed up and i cant figure out how to line it up.

2 - How do I align the header text (home login) to the right? And what do I have to do to make it show the links for shopping cart and check out? It is placed in the header.php

  define('HEADER_TITLE_CREATE_ACCOUNT', 'Create Account');
  define('HEADER_TITLE_MY_ACCOUNT', 'My Account');
  define('HEADER_TITLE_CART_CONTENTS', 'Shopping Cart');
  define('HEADER_TITLE_CHECKOUT', 'Checkout');
  define('HEADER_TITLE_TOP', 'Top');
  define('HEADER_TITLE_CATALOG', 'Home');
  define('HEADER_TITLE_LOGOFF', 'Log Out');
  define('HEADER_TITLE_LOGIN', 'Log In');

3- How do I make the width of the search box bigger in the header?

4 - How do I take off the link to the header picture/logo?

I have searched for the answers and have not been able to find it. Don't know if I am wording it wrong, missing it or just need to take a break.

Sorry for asking so many questions. This is taking me so long to get it looking the way I want and that was one of the reasons I didn't want to change. teehee...but now it's to late...I'm gonna get it finished! :flex:

Thanks for any help!

Thats fixed! Yay!

How do I make the width of the search box bigger in the header?

Working on that one now. Found a few posts but they have not worked so far. :(

Re: Couple of Questions

You can add to your stylesheet

#navMainSearch input {width: 10em !important;}

or you could find the file where the width is set and edit that.

You already have
stylesheet.css (line 91)

input {
width:auto !important;
}
which overrides the setting in the code

element.style {
width:100px;
}

and necessitates the !important in the new rule.

Re: Couple of Questions

input {
	width: auto !important; /*hack for Zen Cart resizing buttons, grr */
}

You should find a different way of fixing whatever this problem was, as it probably affects other inputs as well.

This work. Now just need to make the submit button smaller. Thanks!

Now to work on the other things

Re: Couple of Questions

Ok Here I go again. Been working on this all day :frusty:! I am getting somewhere though.

The problem I am having is:

The search box in my header is a little off with the image I placed on there. Plus - I want to align the box and image behind the navigation.

Home Log In Search

http://www.facetsofgem.com/test/

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Couple of Questions

Having a fixed-width logo that extends wider than but stays centered on the flexible-width mainWrapper is going to be difficult. You need to define more narrowly how you want the page elements to behave.

Re: Couple of Questions

Hmm...ok. Then I am not sure what to do from here then, because even with the logo that comes with zen, it's still showing the way it was. :(

Re: Couple of Questions

This is so frustrating. Basicly what I want to achieve is:

The horizontal drop down menu lined up and all the categories on one line. The header to be aligned to the right (home login search) with the search after it. And then where the logo picture is, I am planning on putting a flash or a slider there. I just want it all lined up.

I don't know why this is so hard for me. I am usually pretty good at this stuff. :(
