Preventing out of stock checkout

In our zen cart setup, I have it so that it automatically prevents someone from adding a product to the cart if it is out of stock. However, let's say we have 120 pieces of product X in stock, and someone adds 130 to cart. It allows them to check out with 130 pieces and the inventory goes to -10. How can I make it so that the quantity added is limited to what we have?

Check these settings in admin>configuration>stock

Check stock level true
Subtract stock true
Allow Checkout false

If I set Admin - Configuration - Stock - Allow Checkout to False, and try to buy more of an item than I have in stock, it won't let me check out. Have you added any checkout-related mods ?
