chnages to home page design

hi,

i am working on https://www.test.sapphiredawn.co.uk. What i would like to do is have the logo wrapper at the top with the sapphire dawn logo, and then just underneath it the picture. i would like to remove the space between the log and picture so it all form one big black box, with the categories listed underneath. but this must only be for the home page, the other pages must not be affected by this. any help on how I can do this?

Re: chnages to home page design

Add to your stylesheet#indexHomeBody #columnCenter {padding-top: 0;} #indexHomeBody h1 {display: none;} #indexHomeBody #indexCategories, #indexHomeBody #indexCategoriesMainContent, #indexHomeBody #indexCategoriesMainContent p, #indexHomeBody #indexCategoriesMainContent img {margin: 0; padding: 0;}or better yet, make a new stylesheet named index_home.css with this content```
#columnCenter {padding-top: 0;}
h1 {display: none;}
#indexCategories, #indexCategoriesMainContent, #indexCategoriesMainContent p, #indexCategoriesMainContent img {margin: 0; padding: 0;}

Glossed over by the graphics...that is what makes it "stunning"

Kinda lie the old addage
"Garbage in - Garbage out"
reused as
"Bad graphics in - bad graphics out"

Ok, easy enough for you to say, but I have spent the last 3 frakking days beating my head against the gorram keyboard trying to figure out this stupid cart. I cannot get past how INSTITUTIONAL it is.

I'm an artist. I make quilts. I make jewelry. I make clothing. I do NOT make websites. I do not understand php or css. I have only a basic knowledge of HTML.

The directories that come with the cart installation have me turned around. The admin portion of the page is not user friendly. Making this cart anything other than an institutionalized shop is seemingly impossible.

You tell me how to make my shop simple and elegant, and do it easily and for free? Maybe I'll make you a quilt. But until then, don't tell me that I'm just glossied by graphics.

*edit: can you tell I'm a bit frustrated?

Re: chnages to home page design

The "stunning" part is in the one-of-a-kind customized graphics; though it does take a clean simple template to let those graphics shine.

It took me a good while (months) without guidance to figure out how to begin customizing the layout like I wanted. You really do need to have a good grasp of CSS to make the template your own. Start in admin by turning off all the things you don't need, then ask for tips when you get stuck.

One can be led to water....being frustrated does not help -
been there and done that

The site you mentioned is using the pure_blue_free zencart template, and if you noticed it has NO blue to be seen....

The tutorials link above right has many of the basic setup questions answered

As an artist, you need to put your first impression aside and look for function in a template selection and many of the pre-made free ones can be demo'd here
http://(sorry, site offline)/

I do not understand php or css. I have only a basic knowledge of HTML.
I don't know php either very well
Css was and is something that was designed for html global styling versus the antiquated inline styling used in the past

w3schools is a resource ad there are others to bone up on css/html

You can learn a lot about CSS at https://www.w3schools.com , including interactive demo pages where you can change the CSS on the left and see the effect on the right side.

I tried to go through their tutorials, I really did. I just got more and more frustrated. I need to make a site for myself, and rebuild the one I did for my mother 8 years ago (all HTML). At this point, I cannot recommend Zen cart. And I have tried stepping through with their tutorials.

Maybe I'm just stupid. I don't know. But without someone sitting here with me, I don't seem to be able to figure it out.

And paying someone to build a site is out of the question. Even if I could afford it, my mother STILL sees me as free/slave labor, and therefore I'm stuck doing her work too.

Still hating zencart.

Re: chnages to home page design

If the way w3schools is set up doesn't work for you, there are lots of other tutorial sites out there. One of them should resonate with you.

What kind of layout are you trying to get, in a nutshell? That is the first part to set up; then colors/graphics can be applied.

I know I need to start with layout, I'm not that silly. That's the issue, though, I can't seem to pare down the template enough that I'm happy with it.

I want a gallery type page where a visitor can see what I have made & then click through to the 'buy it' page. I was told zen cart would be easy for me to do what I want, but it doesn't seem easy at all.

New day, try again. <sigh>

Do you have a current site that you are trying to match?

Re: chnages to home page design

Depending on exactly what you mean by "a gallery type page", you may want to start with installing the Column Layout Grid mod in Free Addons. That will allow you to set up a grid of products in the product listing page. Do you have or expect to have more than one category for your products? If not, you can put all the products in one category, and set admin> Configuration > Layout Settings >
Categories - Always Show on Main Page ->set to 1
Main Page - Opens with Category ->set to your category's id

This will put the product listing on the home page.

I can show you my mother's site (http://www.woollycat.net), but I do not have a site of my own at this time. I have a blog page and I have an Etsy shop and an Artfire shop. I'm tired of my items being lost in the shuffle of every other quilter out there, I need to separate them out.

Ok, searched & found a site somewhat similar to what I am looking for. This is NOT my site, nor do I have any affiliation with them:
http://www.quiltbroker.com/

Once I can get my mess figured out, I have to make zencart work for my mother's site. Tweaking is allowed, but she wants to keep the basic look & feel that we/she already has.

Now do you understand why I'm so frustrated? :-|

Re: chnages to home page design

That is currently set as a 3column layout but you are not displaying any in the left

If you do not intend to use the left column turn it off
admin > config > layout settings > Column Left Status - Global > set to "0"

Because you only have one product in your categories you are not seeing an important page "Product Listing" and there are options for how it displays but need to have more than one item to even begin working n the display

Is Cattails Quilts for Designs by J or for your site?

Re: chnages to home page design

I haven't uploaded all of my items yet. If I can't get this to work, there is no point in me spending all that time to add items to a site I will end up deleting.

Cattails Quilts is my site, Designs by J is my mother's site that I will end up having to make this work on as well.

I have only a basic knowledge of HTML.
Did not state that you need ALL your items loaded just more than one to see the productlist layout and to be able to modify it

Might help if you create a single html page that looks similar to how you want the cart to look - - - your graphics

I see no evidence of graphics on the Designs by J site

No header image
no logo
Etc

Just some divider scrolls & vertical bars - - very 1990-ish html

Have you looked at the templates at the link I provided??
