Bizarre SSL problem - only in Google Chrome browser?

I'm on Zen 1.3.9f with IH2, Multi Cross Sell and a custom theme.

When making the theme I was meticulous to use the Zen convention for links/resources to avoid mixed content warnings. The site tests fine in IE, Firefox, and Safari browsers with no SSL warning.

But in Google Chrome browser, the SSL pages show a warning "this page includes other resources that are not secure". When I inspect the page in the browser console, there are no errors or warnings listed.

I check the page code in Dreamweaver for anything http: and I can't find the problem. I tried deleting the search box, Authorize.net seal, and even the Analytics tracking code but the warning is sill there.

Am I overlooking something obvious?

Here is the source code for a sample page:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

Re: Bizarre SSL problem - only in Google Chrome browser?

Yep, it's your facebook fanpage code that is the culprit, you can wrap it in the following statement to make it not show on SSL secured pages:

<?php
  if ($request_type == 'NONSSL')
  {
?>

<!-- Insert your facebook fanpage code here -->

<?php
    }
?>

Re: Bizarre SSL problem - only in Google Chrome browser?

Interesting... obviously the stuff coming from Facebook is not secure.

But I never worried about it because it's only there on the home page, which should be http. I even altered the login redirect to go to the "My Account" page instead of the home page.

The strange thing is that yesterday, the warning was coming on pages that didn't have the Facebook fan box (like the log in and check out pages), and only in Google Chrome. Today Google Chrome is fine.

But I still like the advice and will make sure the fan box doesn't load on https. Thanks for the code :smile:

Re: Bizarre SSL problem - only in Google Chrome browser?

I have the same problem, however, my facebook widget is in a side box. That being said, I inserted the PHP code into the facebook fanbox_sidebox template, where the content is generated, and I was able to make the widgets disappear, but the the https: warning was still there.

I also have 2 other sideboxes, a google calendar sidebox, and a pandora sidebox, which generate somewhat dynamic text, but when I turned ALL 3 off, I still had the https: warning.

http: //www.tuxedoparkbrewers.com

Maybe I need to figure out how to turn off the sidebox entirely for the said SSL pages...this makes me wonder if there's a list of the standard pages which are generated as https:// when SSL is enabled (instead of trying to guess them all).

Another question is how to generate an alternative block of text in place of the widget -- so that when people see the empty box, it says "I'm hiding to protect your privacy" or something like that. I guess eliminating the box entirely is probably the better solution so it doesn't look missing to begin with.

If you happen to check out the login page for my site, I currently I have commented out the NONSLL code in the sidebox templates. Let me know if it would be helpful to have it uncommented to troubleshoot.

TIA.

JJ

PS. I did it above, but why space the URL to avoid it becoming a link? What protocol is this?

Re: Bizarre SSL problem - only in Google Chrome browser?

lindenboy,

Looking at the source for your /index.php?main_page=login page there are these that link via http being displayed

<script src="http://feeds.pandora.com/feeds/people/brentchapman2/stations.js?max=3&noform"></script></div></div>
<!--// eof: pandorasidebox //-->

<div id="fanboxsideboxContent" class="sideBoxContent"><p><script src="http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"></script><fb:like-box href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tuxedo-Park-Brewers-Supply/178975662139027" width="210" show_faces="true" stream="true" header="true"></fb:like-box></p></div></div>

Re: Bizarre SSL problem - only in Google Chrome browser?

Thank you for pointing out the easiest way to search for the http: links. I guess it wasn't clear to me at first that THOSE links are what is causing the problem.

To test, I simply turned off the sideboxes in questions in the ADMIN and isolated the problem with the facebook and pandora boxes...just as you have suggested. The https: protocol seems to work fine with those boxes off.

I suppose now I have to find a way to turn the sideboxes off on the SSL designated pages. I wonder if there is an easy way hint hint : ) I was thinking that some kind of PHP in tpl_main_page which identifies the sideboxes in question and either displays them or not. I have something similar set up to flag_column_right (turn off the right column) on several pages including all product / category descriptions. I'm hoping to turn up something like that in the forum for sideboxes.

Cheers!

JJ

Re: Bizarre SSL problem - only in Google Chrome browser?

If I wanted to control a sidebox, such as the Featured sidebox to not show on Secure Pages I could use:

// test if box should display
  $show_featured= true;

// bof: do not show on secure pages
  if ($request_type == 'SSL') {
    $show_featured= false;
  }
// eof: do not show on secure pages

  if ($show_featured == true) {

So you could adapt this code for:

// bof: do not show on secure pages
  if ($request_type == 'SSL') {
    // do not do anything on SSL
  } else {
    // add code here to do on non secure pages
// eof: do not show on secure pages

Re: Bizarre SSL problem - only in Google Chrome browser?

Great info. So it isn't really important which pages are presently set for SSL protection (when enabled of course) because you can address them all by using the approach you stated. I love it!

Now it is just a matter of finding the right place to plug it in. One thing I can appreciate about doing the research and testing the techniques in the forum is how much more familiar I get with the structure and bones of Zen Cart. I am by trade an architect, and this is very relative to what I do every day for buildings. Y'all are truly architects of this software :cool:

Thanks.

JJ
