Shipping table questions

Howdy! Working on a site, using v1.3.9h, clean install (just installed this week) with no add-ons. The customer makes and ships candles in the US only, and shipping is currently based on item number. I'm using a shipping table, and it's set up like so:

2:5.95,5:10.95,8:15.95

After a customer purchases over 8 items, she'd like them to call for a shipping quote. Is there an easy way to indicate this in the table at all, or do I need to use a different shipping module entirely?

You could add the code to that shipping module to disable it on 9 or more items ...

Then, the customer will not be able to check out and you can customize the message to say call for shipping ...

However, now you have a customer with an order in the cart that cannot checkout and that would be a problem to clean up the shopping cart on customers who cannot check out because of too many items verses people who want to check out later ...

I use table rate by weight and the last cost in the list is 999.99. Customers then call to say "what the heck? $999.99 to ship something?", where we then quote them the correct price. Of course, at that point we cannot modify the order itself.

Perhaps code could be easily added that when you exceed "X" items or some weight, "CONTACT US AT 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx FOR SHIPPING RATE" is displayed and a box for the customer to add the cost quoted to them to the order. If the customer is no longer online, the store owner would be able to log in as customer (if that module was installed) and complete the transaction.

The OP asked for a simplier process than this though.

You would still need to customize the shipping module to not show when the weight is over the weight that your shipping manages ...

Are you using the Table Rate table or Zone Rate zones shipping module?
